Chapter 10: The Woman Ethan Never Knew

For the first time in Ethan Carter's life, he saw his father speechless.
Not silent because he was thinking.
Not silent because he was calculating.
Silent because he had no way to escape.
The man who had built an empire with confidence and control was now sitting in the middle of his own penthouse, surrounded by the consequences of every secret he had buried.
Ethan stared at him.
"Answer me."
Richard didn't move.
"Who is my real mother?"
The question seemed to break something inside the room.
Victoria's face changed.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Pain.
Ethan noticed.
And that hurt more than anything.
Because despite everything that had happened, some part of him still believed his mother loved him.
Still believed there was something real beneath all the lies.
"Mom?"
Victoria looked at him.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Ethan..."
He stepped back.
"No."
His voice cracked.
"I need the truth."
She looked down.
And that was when Ethan knew.
The answer had existed all along.
They had just hidden it from him.
Richard finally spoke.
"Your mother was named Amelia."
The name was unfamiliar.
A stranger's name.
But somehow, hearing it felt like hearing a piece of his own history.
"Amelia who?"
Richard looked at Claire.
Then at Victoria.
Then back at Ethan.
"Amelia Morgan."
The room went completely silent.
Ethan stopped breathing.
Morgan.
The same name as the company.
The same name as Claire.
The same name that had been erased from history.
"No."
The word left his mouth automatically.
Claire's eyes filled with sadness.
"Yes."
Ethan looked at her.
"You're saying..."
He struggled to finish.
"She's related to you?"
Claire nodded.
"Amelia was my sister."
The truth landed like a storm.
Ethan took several steps backward.
His entire identity shifted.
His mother.
His family.
His inheritance.
Everything.
"My mother was a Morgan?"
Claire nodded.
"Yes."
Ethan looked at Richard.
"Then why did you tell me I was a Carter?"
Richard looked destroyed.
"Because I was afraid."
Ethan laughed bitterly.
"Afraid?"
He shook his head.
"Everyone in this family uses that word."
He looked around.
"You were afraid."
He pointed toward Victoria.
"She was afraid."
He looked at Daniel.
"You were afraid."
Then he looked at Olivia.
"And even you were afraid."
His voice lowered.
"But nobody was afraid of losing me."
A pause.
"Everyone was afraid of losing control."
The words cut deeply.
Olivia stepped closer.
"Ethan..."
He looked at her.
There was pain in his eyes.
"I don't know who I am anymore."
That sentence hurt everyone.
Because Ethan Carter had always been certain.
The confident CEO.
The respected businessman.
The man who knew exactly what he wanted.
But now, he was just a son trying to understand why his entire life had been built on a lie.
Claire walked toward him.
"Your mother wanted to tell you."
Ethan looked at her.
"What happened to her?"
Nobody answered.
And once again, silence became the truth.
"What happened to Amelia?"
Claire looked at Richard.
Richard closed his eyes.
"She died."
Ethan froze.
"When?"
"After you were born."
"How?"
Richard hesitated.
That hesitation made Ethan's blood run cold.
"How?"
Richard whispered:
"An accident."
Nobody believed him.
Not even Richard.
Ethan noticed.
"An accident?"
Claire stepped forward.
"No."
Everyone turned.
"Claire."
She ignored Richard.
"Amelia did not die because of an accident."
The room went still.
Ethan looked at her.
"Then what happened?"
Claire's voice trembled.
"She was trying to expose the truth."
Ethan felt sick.
"Expose what?"
"The theft of Morgan Technologies."
A pause.
"She found evidence."
Richard looked away.
"And someone wanted that evidence gone."
Ethan stared at his father.
"Who?"
Nobody answered.
Then Victoria whispered:
"Richard."
The entire room froze.
Ethan turned.
"What?"
Victoria looked at Richard.
Her voice shook.
"You need to tell him."
Richard stared at her.
For the first time, Ethan saw the two people who raised him looking at each other like enemies.
"Tell him what?"
Victoria swallowed.
"The night Amelia died..."
A pause.
"You weren't alone."
Ethan frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Richard looked at the floor.
And when he spoke, his voice was almost broken.
"Someone else was there."
Ethan's heart raced.
"Who?"
Richard didn't answer.
Victoria did.
"The person who caused the accident..."
She looked at Ethan.
"...was someone you know."
The room went silent.
Ethan felt a cold wave move through him.
Someone he knew.
Someone close.
Someone who had been part of his life.
Then his eyes moved slowly around the room.
Richard.
Victoria.
Daniel.
Olivia.
Claire.
Everyone carried secrets.
But one person stood out.
The person who had benefited from every secret.
The person who had controlled the family for decades.
Ethan whispered:
"Who?"
Victoria closed her eyes.
And then she said the name.
The name that changed everything.
"Thomas Vale."
At that exact moment, Ethan's phone vibrated again.
A new message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
One sentence appeared:
"Your father is not the only person who lied to you."
Below it was an attachment.
An old photograph.
Ethan opened it.
And his blood turned cold.
The picture showed a young Amelia holding baby Ethan.
May you like
Standing beside her...
was Olivia's father.
