Chapter 12: The Mother Hidden for Twenty Years

Ethan stared at the message on his phone.
The words were simple.
Only one sentence.
But they carried the weight of an entire lifetime.
If you want to meet your mother, come alone.
For twenty years, Ethan had lived with one painful truth.
His mother was gone.
Dead.
A memory.
A face in old photographs.
A voice he barely remembered.
He had spent years trying to understand a woman who disappeared before he was old enough to know her.
And now someone was telling him she was alive.
It was impossible.
It had to be impossible.
"Ethan?"
Olivia noticed the change in his expression.
"What happened?"
He didn't answer immediately.
He couldn't.
Because saying the words out loud would make them real.
Finally, he turned the phone around.
Olivia read the message.
Her eyes widened.
"No..."
Claire stepped closer.
"What is it?"
Ethan looked at her.
The woman who had spent years fighting for the truth.
The woman who had lost everything.
"The message says my mother is alive."
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Richard whispered:
"Impossible."
Ethan looked at him.
That single word carried something.
Not surprise.
Fear.
"You knew."
Richard immediately shook his head.
"No."
But his voice betrayed him.
"You knew something."
Richard looked away.
And Ethan felt the same pain again.
Another secret.
Another piece of his life hidden from him.
"Father."
Richard closed his eyes.
"I didn't know where she was."
A pause.
"But you knew she survived."
Silence.
That was enough.
Ethan felt his anger rising.
"You let me believe she was dead."
Richard looked broken.
"I thought she was."
"Thought?"
Richard swallowed.
"After the accident, Amelia disappeared."
"Disappeared?"
Ethan laughed bitterly.
"She was my mother."
His voice cracked.
"You should have searched."
Richard looked down.
"I did."
"Then why did you stop?"
No answer.
Because Ethan already knew.
Someone convinced him to stop.
Someone powerful.
Someone who benefited from Amelia staying hidden.
Alexander stepped forward.
"Thomas."
Everyone looked at him.
"Thomas Vale knew Amelia survived."
Claire's expression changed.
"How?"
Alexander looked at the documents.
"Because he was there."
The room went silent.
Ethan stared.
"He was there the night of the accident?"
Alexander nodded.
"He was the person who found Amelia."
Ethan felt sick.
"And he hid her."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Nobody answered.
Then Olivia spoke quietly.
"Because Amelia knew the truth."
Everyone looked at her.
She continued:
"She knew who destroyed Morgan Technologies."
A pause.
"And she knew who killed her identity."
Ethan looked at the message again.
"Then why contact me now?"
Alexander looked toward the window.
"Because Thomas knows he's losing control."
The rain outside had stopped.
But the storm inside the penthouse had grown stronger.
Ethan looked at Daniel.
His brother stood silently.
Still carrying guilt.
Still hiding something.
"Daniel."
His brother looked up.
"What?"
"Did you know about my mother?"
Daniel's face changed.
"No."
A pause.
"I swear."
Ethan studied him.
For once, Daniel looked honest.
Not afraid.
Not defensive.
Just hurt.
"I didn't know."
Ethan nodded slowly.
Then looked at Olivia.
"And you?"
Her eyes filled with sadness.
"No."
A pause.
"I knew there were secrets."
She looked down.
"But I never knew Amelia was alive."
Ethan believed her.
Because despite everything...
Olivia was the only person in that room who had suffered because she tried to protect him.
Then his phone vibrated again.
Another message.
This time, a location.
And a picture.
Ethan opened it.
His heart stopped.
The photograph showed an elderly woman sitting near a window.
Older.
Thinner.
But the eyes...
Those eyes were the same.
The same eyes from his childhood memories.
His mother.
Below the picture was a message:
"She has been waiting for you."
Ethan stepped back.
Olivia grabbed his arm.
"Ethan, don't go alone."
The old Ethan would have listened.
The son who trusted his family.
The man who believed people always had good intentions.
But that man was gone.
The past twenty-four hours had destroyed him.
"I have to."
Olivia shook her head.
"No."
She held his hand.
"Whatever happened, you don't face it alone."
For a moment, Ethan looked at her.
And he remembered why he fell in love with her.
Not because she made life easier.
Because she stayed when life became impossible.
He nodded.
"You're right."
Alexander stepped forward.
"I'm coming too."
Ethan looked at him.
"Why?"
Alexander gave a sad smile.
"Because if Amelia is alive..."
He looked at Richard.
"...then I need answers too."
Claire quietly said:
"I'll come."
Richard stood.
Everyone turned.
For a moment, nobody knew what to expect.
Then Richard spoke.
"I need to see her."
Ethan stared at him.
The man who had caused so much pain.
The man who had hidden so many truths.
But also the man who was once loved by Amelia.
"Fine."
Ethan grabbed his coat.
"But understand something."
Richard looked at him.
"This isn't about protecting Carter Industries anymore."
A pause.
"This is about my mother."
Everyone left the penthouse together.
For the first time in twenty years...
the Carter family was moving toward the same truth.
But they didn't know one thing.
Someone was watching them.
Across the street.
Inside a black vehicle.
A man lowered his phone after watching Ethan leave.
Thomas Vale.
He smiled faintly.
"Finally."
He looked at the photograph beside him.
A young Amelia.
A young Ethan.
And a secret he had protected for decades.
"Come find her."
He whispered.
"Because when you do..."
May you like
His smile disappeared.
"...you will learn the truth your father never wanted you to know."
