Chapter 8: The Brother Who Came for Revenge

The sound of the intercom echoed through the penthouse.

A voice from the past.

A voice nobody expected to hear.

A voice that carried twenty years of anger.

"Open the door."

Nobody moved.

The entire Carter family stood frozen.

Ethan stared at the security screen.

The man on the other side looked calm.

Too calm.

That was what frightened him.

Anger was easy to understand.

Anger was loud.

But Alexander Carter wasn't angry.

He was controlled.

Like someone who had spent years preparing for this exact moment.

Victoria slowly stepped backward.

"No."

The word escaped her lips.

Ethan looked at her.

For the first time, he saw genuine fear in his mother.

Not the fear of losing money.

Not the fear of losing power.

The fear of facing someone who knew the truth.

"Mom."

Victoria looked at him.

"Do not open that door."

Ethan almost smiled.

After everything that happened tonight, she was still trying to command him.

Still trying to decide what he should know.

What he should feel.

What he should do.

"Why?"

His voice was cold.

"Because he's dangerous."

Ethan looked at the screen.

"Or because he knows what you did?"

Victoria said nothing.

That silence answered him.

Richard walked toward the door.

"Ethan, listen to me."

"No."

Ethan stopped him.

"You have been telling me what to do my entire life."

His eyes hardened.

"Tonight, I make my own decisions."

He pressed the button.

The door unlocked.

A few seconds later, Alexander Carter walked into the penthouse.

And Ethan understood immediately.

The resemblance wasn't just in the eyes.

It was everything.

The way he stood.

The way he looked around the room.

The quiet confidence.

The feeling that he belonged there.

Because in a way...

he did.

Alexander was older than Ethan by about eight years.

His hair had traces of gray.

His face carried the marks of a difficult life.

Not the polished appearance of the Carter family.

No expensive suit.

No luxury watch.

Just a dark jacket and a tired expression.

But somehow, he looked more powerful than everyone in the room.

His eyes stopped on Richard.

"Hello, Father."

Richard looked away.

The word hurt him.

Ethan noticed.

Alexander smiled bitterly.

"Interesting."

He looked around.

"The great Richard Carter."

A pause.

"Still can't look at his own son."

Victoria stepped forward.

"You need to leave."

Alexander turned toward her.

And laughed.

A quiet, empty laugh.

"After twenty years, that's the first thing you say to me?"

Victoria's expression remained cold.

"You have no right to come here."

"No right?"

Alexander looked around.

"This house."

He pointed at the penthouse.

"This company."

He looked at Richard.

"This name."

Then he looked back at Victoria.

"Everything I lost built everything you gained."

The words were heavy.

Ethan watched silently.

Because for the first time, he wasn't seeing a family argument.

He was seeing history.

A wound that never healed.

Alexander turned toward Ethan.

"And you must be Ethan."

Ethan nodded slightly.

"Yes."

Alexander studied him.

"You look like him."

Ethan knew exactly who he meant.

Richard.

The comment felt strange.

Like a compliment and an insult at the same time.

"Why are you here?"

Ethan asked.

Alexander looked at him.

"That's a good question."

He reached into his jacket.

Everyone tensed.

But he only pulled out an old envelope.

He placed it on the table.

"I didn't come here to hurt anyone."

Victoria gave a cold smile.

"Then why?"

Alexander looked at her.

"Because someone needs to finally tell Ethan the truth."

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"I already heard a lot of truths tonight."

Alexander shook his head.

"No."

He looked directly at him.

"You heard their version."

A pause.

"You haven't heard mine."

The room became silent.

Alexander opened the envelope.

Inside were old letters.

Photographs.

Medical records.

Legal documents.

Evidence from another lifetime.

"My mother didn't abandon me."

He looked at Richard.

"You told everyone she did."

Richard's face changed.

Ethan looked at his father.

"What?"

Alexander continued.

"When Morgan Technologies started becoming successful, Richard realized something."

He picked up a document.

"That if he controlled the company, he controlled everything."

Claire closed her eyes.

She had lived with this pain.

But hearing it again still hurt.

"Richard tried to force me and my mother out."

Alexander's voice remained steady.

"He created fake financial problems."

He looked at Ethan.

"He destroyed our reputation."

Ethan felt sick.

"And then?"

Alexander looked at Victoria.

"Then she helped him."

Victoria immediately responded.

"That is not true."

Alexander smiled.

"Of course you would say that."

He placed another document down.

A bank transfer.

A payment.

Ethan picked it up.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

The recipient name.

Victoria Carter.

The amount.

Ten million dollars.

The date.

The week Alexander disappeared.

Ethan looked at his mother.

"Explain."

Victoria's face remained still.

But her hands were shaking.

"Ethan..."

"No."

He held up the document.

"Explain."

Richard stepped forward.

"She was trying to protect us."

Ethan turned.

"Stop saying that word."

His voice broke.

"Stop pretending every betrayal was protection."

Nobody spoke.

Alexander looked at Ethan.

"I didn't come here for revenge."

Ethan looked surprised.

"Then why?"

Alexander took a breath.

"Because I found out someone is trying to finish what they started twenty years ago."

Ethan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Alexander looked toward Olivia.

"She was not attacked because she found the documents."

Olivia looked at him.

"Then why?"

Alexander's expression became serious.

"Because she found something else."

Ethan felt a chill.

"What?"

Alexander slowly answered:

"The person who stole Morgan Technologies never stopped."

A pause.

"They have been hiding inside Carter Industries for years."

Ethan looked around the room.

His family.

His company.

His entire life.

"Who?"

Alexander's eyes moved toward Daniel.

Everyone turned.

Daniel froze.

"No."

Ethan stared at his brother.

"Daniel?"

Alexander's voice was quiet.

"The person who has been moving money."

"The person who erased records."

"The person who sent the message to Olivia."

Daniel's face turned pale.

"That's impossible."

Alexander looked at him.

"Is it?"

A long silence.

Then Ethan noticed something.

Daniel wasn't shocked.

He was afraid.

And fear was sometimes more revealing than guilt.

"Daniel..."

His brother looked at him.

"Ethan, I can explain."

Those four words destroyed him.

Because innocent people usually said:

"I don't know what you're talking about."

Guilty people said:

"I can explain."

Ethan took a step back.

The family he thought he knew had disappeared completely.

May you like

And now the person he trusted most after Olivia...

might have been the one standing in the shadows all along.
