Chapter 5: The Wife Who Carried the Secret Alone

The document remained on the table.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody wanted to.

Because sometimes the truth was not something people searched for.

Sometimes the truth was something people feared finding.

Ethan stared at Olivia.

The woman he had trusted with every part of himself.

His dreams.

His failures.

His fears.

The woman who knew every scar he carried.

And yet...

there was a part of her life he knew nothing about.

"Five years ago."

Ethan repeated the words slowly.

His voice wasn't angry anymore.

That was what scared Olivia the most.

Anger meant there was still something left to fight for.

Silence meant something had already started breaking.

"What happened five years ago?"

Olivia looked down.

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the sofa.

"I was investigating Carter Industries."

The words landed softly.

But they destroyed the room.

Ethan blinked.

"You were investigating my company?"

"No."

She looked at him.

"I was investigating what your company was built on."

Ethan felt his chest tighten.

"Why?"

Olivia took a breath.

"Because I found financial records that didn't match."

Richard looked away.

Victoria remained cold.

But Ethan saw it.

The fear.

They knew this moment would come.

"I was working with the Carter Foundation at the time," Olivia continued. "I was reviewing old charity investments and corporate donations."

She looked at the documents.

"That's when I found irregular transfers."

"Transfers from where?"

"Morgan Technologies."

Claire closed her eyes.

Even after twenty years, hearing the name still hurt.

Ethan looked at her.

"And you investigated."

Olivia nodded.

"I thought it was just financial fraud."

A pause.

"Then I discovered it was much bigger."

The rain outside became heavier.

Like the entire city was listening.

"I found records showing that Morgan Technologies didn't collapse."

Claire looked at her.

"It was stolen."

Olivia nodded.

"Yes."

Ethan looked at Richard.

His father said nothing.

And somehow, that silence felt like a confession.

"But why didn't you tell me?"

The question came quietly.

That hurt Olivia more than anger.

Because she had expected Ethan to hate her.

She had expected accusations.

But she hadn't expected disappointment.

"I tried."

Ethan frowned.

"What?"

"I tried to tell you."

Her voice trembled.

"Three times."

He stared at her.

"Three times?"

Olivia nodded.

"But every time, something happened."

"What do you mean?"

She looked at Victoria.

The answer was clear.

Ethan followed her gaze.

And suddenly, he understood.

His mother.

"You threatened her."

Victoria's expression did not change.

"I warned her."

"You threatened my wife."

"I protected this family."

Ethan stepped closer.

"No."

His voice was cold.

"You protected yourself."

Victoria stood.

"You have no idea what you're talking about."

"Then explain."

For once, Victoria had no answer.

Olivia continued.

"Your mother knew I had the evidence."

She looked at Ethan.

"She told me if I exposed the truth, Carter Industries would collapse."

"So?"

Olivia looked away.

"She said thousands of employees would lose their jobs."

Ethan froze.

Because that sounded exactly like something his mother would say.

Not a threat.

A responsibility.

A weapon disguised as concern.

"She knew I cared about innocent people."

Olivia whispered.

"She used that against me."

Claire looked at Victoria with disgust.

"You manipulated her."

Victoria remained silent.

Ethan looked at Olivia.

"And the agreement?"

Olivia closed her eyes.

"Your mother forced me to sign it."

"Forced?"

"She gave me two choices."

Her voice became smaller.

"Stay quiet and protect the company..."

She swallowed.

"Or expose everything and be blamed for destroying thousands of lives."

Ethan felt his anger turning into something else.

Pain.

Because he finally understood.

Olivia hadn't betrayed him.

She had been trapped.

"But why didn't you tell me later?"

Olivia looked at him.

"Because by then, I knew."

"Knew what?"

"That someone inside your family would do anything to stop the truth."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"And I was afraid they would hurt you."

Ethan looked at her.

"You thought they would hurt me?"

She nodded.

"I knew what they were capable of."

A long silence followed.

Then Ethan turned toward Richard.

"Did you know?"

Richard looked broken.

"Yes."

The answer came immediately.

Ethan's face changed.

His father didn't even try to lie.

"I knew Olivia found something."

"And you let this happen?"

Richard looked down.

"I thought I could fix it."

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"You always think you can fix everything."

His voice lowered.

"But you never think about the people you destroy."

Richard closed his eyes.

"I was wrong."

"No."

Ethan shook his head.

"You weren't wrong."

A pause.

"You were selfish."

The words cut deeper than shouting.

Then Daniel suddenly stepped forward.

"Ethan, there's something else."

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel looked terrified.

"What?"

His brother hesitated.

Then whispered:

"The night Olivia was attacked..."

Ethan's expression changed.

"What about it?"

Daniel swallowed.

"She wasn't the target."

The room went completely still.

Ethan stared.

"What are you saying?"

Daniel looked at Victoria.

Then Richard.

Then finally Ethan.

"The person they wanted to silence..."

He paused.

"...was you."

A cold feeling moved through Ethan's body.

"What?"

Daniel continued.

"Someone discovered you were about to transfer control of Carter Industries."

Ethan frowned.

"I never planned that."

Daniel looked at him.

"Because you didn't know."

A pause.

"Your father secretly prepared documents transferring ownership of the company to you."

Ethan looked at Richard.

Richard said nothing.

"And someone wanted those documents destroyed before you found them."

Ethan's eyes hardened.

"Who?"

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel slowly turned toward the hallway.

Everyone followed his gaze.

The penthouse door was slightly open.

But nobody had entered.

Nobody had left.

Except...

Ethan remembered.

When he arrived tonight, the security system had been disabled.

Someone had let themselves in.

Someone who knew the penthouse.

Someone who belonged there.

Then Daniel whispered the words that changed everything:

"The person who attacked Olivia..."

May you like

His voice shook.

"...was someone inside this family."
