Chapter 7: The Forgotten Son Returns

The photograph remained on the table.

A small piece of paper.

A frozen moment in time.

Yet it had shattered everything Ethan believed about his life.

He stared at the child in the picture.

The boy had Richard Carter's eyes.

The same intense gaze Ethan had seen every morning in the mirror.

The same expression that carried determination, stubbornness, and pride.

A Carter.

But not the Carter he knew.

"You're lying."

Ethan finally spoke.

The words came out quietly.

Not because he believed it.

But because he needed them to be false.

Claire looked at him with sadness.

"I wish I was."

Ethan turned toward his father.

"Tell me she's wrong."

Richard stood motionless.

For years, Ethan had watched his father negotiate billion-dollar deals without hesitation.

He had watched him walk into rooms full of powerful people and control the conversation.

But tonight...

Richard Carter looked like a man who had run out of places to hide.

"Ethan..."

"Don't."

The warning in his voice stopped him.

"Not another excuse."

A pause.

"Just the truth."

Richard looked at the photograph.

Then whispered:

"Alexander was born before you."

Ethan felt his chest tighten.

"Before me?"

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

The room seemed to become colder.

"My first marriage was to Claire."

Richard looked at the woman standing across from him.

"Before everything changed."

Ethan looked at Claire.

"And him?"

Claire's expression softened.

"Alexander was our son."

The word hit harder than Ethan expected.

Our son.

Not a mistake.

Not a secret.

A person.

A child who had existed.

A brother who had lived somewhere in the world while Ethan grew up believing he was an only child.

"Why didn't I know?"

Nobody answered.

Ethan looked at Victoria.

His mother.

The woman who raised him.

The woman who kissed his forehead when he was sick.

The woman who told him family meant everything.

"Why didn't I know?"

Victoria finally spoke.

"Because it was complicated."

Ethan stared at her.

"Complicated?"

His voice rose.

"You erased a person."

Victoria's expression hardened.

"We protected you."

"No."

Ethan shook his head.

"You protected yourselves."

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

He had known pieces of the truth.

But even he seemed shocked.

Claire walked toward Ethan.

"Alexander wasn't just hidden because of a divorce."

She looked at Richard.

"He was hidden because he was a threat."

Ethan frowned.

"A threat?"

Claire nodded.

"Because legally, Alexander was the rightful heir to Morgan Technologies."

The room went silent.

Ethan understood.

The stolen company.

The inheritance.

The missing son.

Everything connected.

"Wait."

He looked at the documents.

"If Alexander was the heir..."

Claire nodded.

"Then Richard's entire empire was built on something that belonged to him."

Ethan looked at his father.

"Did you know?"

Richard looked away.

"Yes."

The answer was devastating.

Ethan laughed softly.

A painful sound.

"Of course you did."

He walked toward the window.

The city stretched below him.

Millions of people.

Millions of lives.

And yet, he had never felt more alone.

"My entire life..."

He whispered.

"I thought I was carrying this family's legacy."

He turned around.

"But I was carrying stolen property."

Richard stepped forward.

"Ethan, I was trying to fix it."

"When?"

His father stopped.

"When were you planning to fix it?"

Silence.

"After I died?"

Richard looked hurt.

But Ethan continued.

"Or after everything was buried so deeply nobody could find it?"

Richard had no answer.

Then Olivia quietly spoke.

"Ethan."

He looked at her.

"There is something else."

His expression changed.

"What?"

She hesitated.

"The person who contacted me before the attack..."

Everyone turned.

"You knew who contacted you?"

Olivia nodded.

"I didn't know at first."

She looked at Claire.

"But after seeing that photograph..."

Her voice lowered.

"I think I understand."

Ethan felt a chill.

"Who?"

Olivia reached into her bag.

She pulled out an envelope.

"I received this two weeks ago."

She handed it to him.

The envelope was old.

No return address.

No name.

Only one sentence written on the front.

For the family that stole my life.

Ethan opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

A man standing outside the Carter Industries headquarters.

Older.

Tall.

Dark hair.

Eyes full of anger.

But Ethan recognized him immediately.

Because those eyes looked back at him.

A stranger who looked like family.

Alexander Carter.

On the back of the photograph were five words:

I am coming home.

Ethan's hands tightened around the picture.

"When did you get this?"

Olivia looked down.

"Two weeks ago."

"And you didn't tell me?"

"I was trying to protect you."

The same words.

Again.

Protect.

Everyone kept using that word.

But Ethan was beginning to understand.

Protection could become another form of control.

Before he could respond, the penthouse lights suddenly went out.

The room fell into darkness.

A second later, the security alarm began screaming.

Everyone froze.

Then came the sound.

A slow knock.

Three times.

From the front door.

Nobody moved.

The lights returned.

And on the security screen appeared a face.

A man standing outside the penthouse.

The forgotten son.

Alexander Carter.

Richard stepped back.

Victoria's face lost all color.

And Ethan stared at the brother he never knew existed.

The man who had returned to destroy everything.

Then Alexander spoke through the intercom.

"Open the door."

May you like

A pause.

"I think it's time my family remembers me."
