Chapter 9 - My Father’s Secret

Emily refused to remain silent after the doctors stabilized her.
She told Elena everything she remembered.
Six months into my deployment, Caleb arrived at our house claiming I had been killed during a classified operation.
He produced military documents.
He brought Mother with him.
They pressured Emily to move into the estate until the pregnancy ended.
Emily contacted my commanding office and learned the documents were false.
Before she could leave, Sheriff Crane confiscated her phone and claimed she was mentally unstable.
Owen began sedating her.
Lila Hart was hired to falsify hospital files.
Instead, Lila secretly helped Emily record the conspiracy.
The plan changed when Emily discovered my father’s hidden archive.
“What did Dad hide?” I asked.
Emily looked toward Elena.
“A genetic access system.”
My father, Thomas Hale, had founded a defense-technology company before his death.
Its most valuable work involved encrypted biometric identification.
Before retiring, he discovered that Caleb had been selling restricted prototypes through Meridian Family Holdings.
Dad removed Caleb from the company.
Then he hid the evidence inside a digital vault.
The vault required genetic confirmation from two direct descendants.
Caleb needed my blood and Noah’s.
“Why Noah?”
“Because the system recognizes generational succession.”
“You and your child create a matching inheritance chain.”
“That’s why Caleb planned to take Noah after I died.”
Emily reached into the evidence bag beside her.
She removed a photograph Lila had hidden inside her shoe.
It showed Caleb standing beside my father three days before Dad’s fatal car crash.
Caleb had always claimed he was overseas.
“He killed Dad,” I said.
“We don’t know that.”
“I know my brother.”
Emily touched my hand.
“You didn’t know this version of him.”
Elena entered with an update.
Caleb and Mother had gone to the old Hale factory.
The property contained the original biometric vault.
Federal teams could surround the building, but rushing inside might endanger Noah if Caleb somehow obtained him.
“He doesn’t have Noah,” I said.
Elena’s expression tightened.
“The neonatal unit lost power twenty minutes ago.”
My pulse stopped.
“What happened?”
“A woman used your mother’s identification to enter the restricted floor.”
“Noah’s bassinet was found empty.”
Emily tried to stand.
Doctors restrained her gently.
I ran.
At the hospital, security footage showed Mother carrying Noah into a service elevator.
Caleb waited in an ambulance below.
They had my son.
A nurse found something beneath Noah’s mattress.
A small recording device.
Caleb’s voice played through it.
“Midnight.”
“Bring the brass key.”
May you like
“And Daniel, do not bring Elena.”
“If I see one federal vehicle, Mother drops your son into the same furnace where we destroyed Dad’s car.”
