Chapter 15 - The Stolen Sample

Noah had undergone a heel-stick test while Mother held him at the estate.

Marissa claimed it was routine.

It had never been sent to a hospital laboratory.

Rebecca already possessed his blood.

Her demand was a distraction.

The frozen vial from the cemetery contained Thomas Hale’s marrow.

Together, the samples could generate a synthetic profile capable of opening every remaining Hale system.

Elena traced Rebecca’s phone to a Meridian research facility beneath St. Matthew’s abandoned maternity wing.

The hospital had closed the ward publicly.

Underground laboratories continued operating.

Federal teams entered through three access points.

Emily insisted on joining the command center.

I insisted on entering with Elena.

The corridors smelled exactly like the cellar beneath Mother’s estate.

Bleach.

Metal.

Cold air.

We found dozens of blood samples labeled with women’s names.

Some dated back fifteen years.

The project had never focused only on the Hale family.

Meridian had built a database of newborn genetic identities.

Rebecca intended to sell artificial biometric profiles to people who wanted to disappear, inherit assets, or bypass national-security systems.

Inside the central laboratory, Thomas’s remains lay beneath a transparent surgical covering.

For the second time, I confronted the body of a father I had already mourned.

This time, the scars matched the crash photographs.

The dental records matched.

Thomas Hale was finally found.

Rebecca watched us through a glass partition.

She held a vial containing Noah’s blood.

“Stop the upload,” she said.

“What upload?”

“The files you released from the factory included patient data Thomas failed to redact.”

“That is a lie.”

“Check your federal server.”

Elena contacted the cyber team.

Their answer came back quickly.

Rebecca was partially correct.

The public transmission had protected patient names.

But an encrypted backup contained genetic profiles.

Someone had begun downloading it.

“Who?” I asked.

Rebecca smiled.

“Caleb.”

“He is in custody.”

“His body is.”

“His access key is not.”

Caleb had implanted a subdermal transmitter inside his broken wrist years earlier.

When agents treated the injury, the device activated.

It began transferring Meridian’s genetic database to an unknown buyer.

Rebecca offered the deactivation key in exchange for safe passage.

Elena refused.

Rebecca raised Noah’s blood sample over an incinerator slot.

“The database can still be stopped.”

“But if this sample burns, you lose the only proof that Noah is Daniel’s biological son.”

Emily’s earlier fear returned.

The forged tests had been designed to create doubt.

This legitimate sample could end it.

I looked through the glass at Rebecca.

“Burn it.”

She hesitated.

“You need certainty.”

“No.”

“My son does not need a laboratory to earn my protection.”

Rebecca’s confidence vanished.

Elena triggered the laboratory lockdown.

Steel shutters fell.

Rebecca ran toward an emergency exit.

Thomas’s body began sliding toward the incineration chamber.

I had seconds to choose between catching her and saving my father’s remains.

I chose my father.

Rebecca escaped through a surgical waste tunnel.

But she left the deactivation key behind.
