Chapter 20 - The Brother on the Line

I answered without speaking.
Caleb’s breathing came through the phone.
He sounded weak but alive.
“Check the flash drive.”
“Where are you?”
“Far enough away.”
“You left us inside a burning house.”
“I gave you the will.”
“You created the fire.”
“Rebecca created the ending.”
“You let it happen.”
He laughed softly.
“You still believe the person who survives is the person who wins.”
“What is on the drive?”
“The part Father removed from his confession.”
Emily connected it to an isolated laptop.
A final video appeared.
Thomas sat beside Jonathan inside the original factory vault.
The recording was dated two weeks before Thomas’s death.
Thomas looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel, if Caleb gives you this, then he has finally chosen to expose me.”
Caleb spoke through the phone.
“Keep watching.”
Thomas explained that Meridian had begun as a sanctioned government program.
Its purpose was to protect military families by creating unbreakable biometric access to benefits, identities, and emergency funds.
After the program succeeded, Thomas secretly expanded it.
He sold access to intelligence agencies without authorization.
Jonathan and Owen later sold it to criminals.
Caleb had not created Meridian.
He had inherited an operation already corrupted by our father.
Thomas’s confession at the factory had exposed everyone except himself.
“He built the first illegal database,” Emily whispered.
Caleb heard her.
“Yes.”
“Father turned newborns into security keys.”
“He used Daniel’s military records to test inheritance recognition.”
“You were part of the project before you could walk.”
My entire life had been shaped by a system I never knew existed.
“Why tell me now?”
“Because Rebecca sold thirteen percent of the database.”
“The buyer was not overseas.”
“Who was it?”
“A federal division called Sentinel.”
Elena had mentioned no division by that name.
Caleb continued.
“Sentinel funded Thomas from the beginning.”
“They allowed the arrests because Meridian became inconvenient.”
“Now they possess enough data to rebuild it legally.”
Emily looked toward Noah’s crib.
“What do they want?”
Caleb’s voice became quiet.
“They want Noah.”
The nursery lights went out.
Our security alarm remained silent.
Downstairs, the front door opened.
Several sets of footsteps entered the house.
A man’s voice called my name.
“Captain Daniel Hale.”
“This is Special Director Adrian Cross with the Sentinel Biometric Security Office.”
“We need to discuss your son’s national-security designation.”
I moved Emily and Noah toward the reinforced closet.
“Call Elena.”
Emily checked her phone.
No signal.
Caleb spoke one final time.
“I told you I wanted your life, Daniel.”
“I was wrong.”
“I wanted a life that had never been designed by Father.”
“The men downstairs designed yours before you were born.”
“What do I do?”
For the first time since childhood, my brother answered without jealousy or cruelty.
“Protect your family.”
“Then find me.”
The call ended.
A red laser moved slowly across the nursery wall.
I closed the reinforced door behind Emily and Noah.
Then I removed the emergency weapon Elena had hidden beneath the crib after the hospital abduction.
Special Director Cross reached the top of the stairs.
“We are not your enemies, Captain.”
I stood in the dark hallway.
Every lie I had uncovered began with someone saying they were protecting my family.
I raised the weapon.
May you like
“Then keep your hands where I can see them.”
