Chapter 14 - Lila’s Real Name

Lila vanished before federal agents could question her.

The hospital camera showed her leaving in a maintenance uniform.

Her medical monitors had been disconnected with professional precision.

Elena traced her fingerprints again.

The identity of Lila Hart belonged to a child who died twenty-nine years earlier.

The woman we had rescued from Owen’s jet was Dr. Rebecca Vale.

She specialized in behavioral genetics.

She had worked with Jonathan on the original biometric program.

Emily stared at Rebecca’s photograph.

“She was kind to me.”

“She brought food when Marissa refused.”

“She gave me the camera.”

“She helped switch the bodies.”

“That does not mean she was protecting you,” Elena said.

Rebecca had designed the identity substitution.

She recruited Kendra Cole to impersonate Emily’s corpse.

When Kendra threatened to leave, Owen killed her.

Rebecca then substituted another sedated woman in the coffin long enough to create confusion.

That woman was Marissa’s sister.

Rebecca intended to extract both Emily and Noah from the country.

“Why?” I asked.

Elena opened a recovered Meridian file.

PROJECT SUCCESSION.

The program studied whether biometric authority could be inherited, altered, or artificially reproduced.

Thomas shut it down because the experiments involved pregnant women and infants.

Jonathan restarted it.

Emily had been selected because she was carrying a child from the Hale bloodline.

Rebecca did not care about the inheritance.

She wanted Noah’s genetic data.

The passport user in Dulles had been Rebecca.

She deliberately created a false trail while traveling under Emily’s identity.

A federal alert was issued.

Her last known vehicle was found near the estate.

Inside were medical supplies and a map of the old family cemetery.

We searched after dark.

Thomas Hale’s grave had been opened.

The coffin was empty.

According to Jonathan’s files, Thomas’s body had never been buried there.

Owen preserved it inside a Meridian laboratory.

Rebecca had now taken it.

“What can she do with a dead man’s body?” I asked.

Elena looked toward the genetic research report.

“She doesn’t need the body.”

“She needs bone marrow.”

Emily held Noah closer.

A drone appeared above the cemetery.

It released a small package.

Agents ordered everyone back.

The package contained no explosive.

Inside was a frozen vial and a phone.

The phone rang.

Rebecca’s voice greeted me.

“Daniel, your father made one mistake.”

“He believed blood proves identity.”

“I can make the vault believe anyone is a Hale.”

“What do you want?”

“The only sample I cannot reproduce.”

“Noah’s blood before his first birthday.”

“He is six days old.”

“Exactly.”

“Newborn blood contains markers that disappear within weeks.”

Emily seized the phone.

“You will never touch him.”

Rebecca laughed softly.

“I already did.”

We examined Noah’s hospital bracelet.

A pinprick mark was visible beneath the plastic.
