Chapter 12 - The Impostor

The man inside the vault did not deny it.

He lowered his hand from the scanner.

“My name is Jonathan Hale.”

“My father had a brother,” I said.

“A twin brother.”

The family had been told Jonathan died as an infant.

Instead, he had been raised by my grandfather’s sister after a bitter inheritance dispute.

Thomas and Jonathan met secretly as adults.

They built the biometric system together.

“When Caleb attacked Thomas,” Jonathan said, “your father asked me to disappear with the evidence.”

“You let us bury an empty coffin.”

“I believed revealing myself would lead Meridian to Daniel.”

“They found us anyway.”

The countdown reached three minutes.

The system requested direct-descendant confirmation.

Only my blood could stop the destruction sequence.

I placed my injured hand against the scanner.

It rejected me.

My blood type matched the records.

My DNA should have matched.

Unless the system did not recognize me as Thomas Hale’s son.

Caleb laughed again.

“Now you understand.”

Mother covered her face.

I turned toward her.

“What did you do?”

She did not answer.

Jonathan did.

“Daniel is my son.”

The factory seemed to disappear beneath my feet.

Years before I was born, Mother had an affair with Jonathan.

Thomas knew.

He chose to raise me as his own.

Caleb was Thomas’s biological son.

I was Jonathan’s.

That was why my genetic signature failed against Thomas’s vault.

But Jonathan was still a Hale twin.

His DNA should have been close.

The system had been deliberately designed to distinguish them.

“Why does Noah matter?” I asked.

Jonathan looked toward my son.

“Because the vault requires two generations from my bloodline.”

“You and Noah.”

I understood Emily’s warning.

Caleb did not want a normal blood test.

He wanted Noah’s genetic confirmation.

The countdown reached two minutes.

I would not expose my son to a machine built by men who had lied for decades.

Elena examined the control panel.

“There must be another override.”

Jonathan pointed toward three mechanical switches.

“Thomas believed human judgment should outrank genetics.”

“One switch opens the records.”

“One destroys them.”

“One transmits everything publicly.”

“Which is which?”

“He told Emily.”

Of course he had.

Emily had found the archive before Caleb captured her.

I called the hospital.

She answered immediately.

I described the switches.

Red.

Black.

White.

Emily breathed slowly.

“Thomas said truth should never be hidden in darkness.”

“The white switch.”

Jonathan reached for it.

I caught his wrist.

“Why are you so eager?”

The countdown reached sixty seconds.

Jonathan looked at me.

“Because Thomas recorded my crimes too.”

He drove his cane into my wounded shoulder.

I fell.

Jonathan reached for the black switch.

Elena fired.

The bullet struck his cane, knocking it away.

I hit the white switch.

The vault screens illuminated.

Thousands of files began transmitting to federal servers.

The countdown stopped at three seconds.

Jonathan collapsed against the wall.

“You have no idea what you released.”

A video appeared on the central screen.

May you like

Thomas Hale sat behind his desk.

“If Daniel has opened this file,” he said, “then my brother has already lied about why I died.”
