Chapter 10 - The Hale Factory

The Hale factory had been abandoned for twelve years.
Its broken windows reflected the moonlight.
Rusting machinery filled the main assembly floor.
At the center of the building stood the biometric vault my father had designed.
Mother waited beside it with Noah in her arms.
Caleb stood on a metal platform above the industrial furnace.
A pistol rested in his hand.
I entered alone.
At least, that was what Caleb believed.
Elena’s team had approached through underground maintenance tunnels.
Their radios remained silent.
“You came,” Caleb said.
“Give me my son.”
“Give me the key.”
I held up the brass key from the basement medical room.
Caleb smiled.
“That opens the physical vault.”
“Where is the genetic key?”
“In me.”
“And in Noah.”
Mother looked down at the baby.
For the first time, fear entered her face.
“You said you only needed a swab.”
“I need blood.”
“You will not hurt him.”
Caleb laughed.
“You watched Emily scream in that cellar.”
“Do not pretend you have boundaries now.”
Mother’s arms tightened around Noah.
“I was protecting the family.”
“You were protecting your inheritance.”
“And you were protecting nothing but your jealousy.”
Their alliance was collapsing.
I stepped closer.
“Noah isn’t my father’s biological grandson.”
Caleb’s smile disappeared.
“What?”
“The tests were real.”
It was a calculated lie.
Emily had already confirmed the tests were false.
But Caleb did not know what I knew.
“You built your entire plan around the wrong child.”
“You’re lying.”
“Open the vault and see.”
Caleb descended from the platform.
His attention shifted from Noah to me.
That was what I needed.
Mother backed toward the exit.
Caleb noticed.
“Don’t move.”
She froze.
I tossed the brass key onto the floor between us.
Caleb bent to retrieve it.
I lunged.
The gun fired.
Pain tore across my shoulder.
I drove him into the concrete.
Mother screamed.
Noah began crying.
Caleb struck my wound and rolled free.
He pointed the pistol toward the furnace controls.
“If I cannot open the vault, no one gets the evidence.”
He fired into the control panel.
Sparks exploded.
The furnace ignited.
Flames climbed through the open chamber.
The factory lights flickered on.
Elena’s voice thundered from the upper walkway.
“Drop the weapon.”
Federal agents surrounded us.
Caleb seized Mother and pressed the pistol against her head.
Then a mechanical lock opened inside the vault.
The steel door slowly moved aside.
May you like
Someone was already inside.
My father stepped from the darkness.
