Chapter 18 - The Burning Estate

The estate burned from the inside outward.

Caleb had sealed the exterior doors.

Rebecca controlled the old fire-suppression system from the basement.

Emily and I entered through the chapel tunnel.

Elena’s agents attacked the fire controls from outside.

Smoke filled the library.

Portraits of generations of Hales blackened against the walls.

Beneath my father’s desk, a steel hatch stood open.

The final vault was not digital.

It was an archive of physical contracts, research notebooks, and original patent designs.

Caleb stood beside them with a fuel can.

Rebecca held a pistol on Emily.

“You came,” Caleb said.

“You knew we would.”

“I knew Emily could not allow the research to burn.”

He looked at her almost tenderly.

“You always understood its value.”

Emily’s voice remained steady.

“I understood what you became for it.”

Rebecca opened a case containing Noah’s stolen blood sample.

“Thomas built every system around inheritance.”

“He thought family loyalty was more secure than mathematics.”

“He was wrong.”

Caleb poured fuel across the archive floor.

“Give me control of the patent trust.”

“No,” I said.

“Then everything burns.”

“Thomas wanted it destroyed.”

Emily looked at me.

The truth passed between us.

For weeks, we had fought to preserve evidence, inheritance, and technology.

But Thomas’s final request had been simple.

Choose family over legacy.

Emily stepped away from the patent controls.

“Burn it.”

Caleb stared at her.

“You don’t mean that.”

“I do.”

“The medical patents are worth billions.”

“They cost Kendra her life.”

“They nearly cost Noah his.”

“They are not worth one more person.”

Rebecca’s pistol shifted toward Emily.

“You self-righteous fool.”

She fired.

I pulled Emily down.

The bullet struck Caleb.

He stumbled backward in shock.

Rebecca ran toward the exit with Noah’s sample.

Caleb looked at the blood spreading across his shirt.

“You brought her here.”

“You planned with her.”

“She was supposed to shoot you.”

“She never needed you.”

For the first time, he understood how completely Rebecca had used him.

He grabbed her ankle as she passed.

She fell.

The blood vial rolled toward the fire.

Emily caught it before the glass reached the flames.

Rebecca struck her.

I tackled Rebecca against a cabinet.

The pistol discharged into the fuel.

Fire swept across the floor.

Elena’s team broke through the upper hatch.

Agents dragged Rebecca away.

I reached for Caleb.

He was lying beside the burning archive.

“Take my hand.”

He laughed weakly.

“You always get to be the hero.”

“This is not about me.”

“It was always about you.”

The ceiling began collapsing.

I grabbed his coat.

He pulled free.

“Let it end here.”

Then he pushed a metal case toward me.

“Dad’s real will.”

“Take Noah and go.”

May you like

A burning beam fell between us.

Caleb disappeared behind the flames.
