Chapter 17 - The Lie Between Us

I confronted Emily in the hospital garden.
She did not deny contacting Caleb.
Three weeks before my deployment, she discovered Meridian payments linked to Mother.
She feared that someone inside my family was watching us.
She asked Caleb for help because she did not yet know he was involved.
“What did you mean by disappear?”
“I wanted new identification.”
“For you?”
“For us.”
“You planned to leave me?”
“I planned to ask you to come.”
“You never did.”
“You received deployment orders the next morning.”
“I thought I could gather proof before you returned.”
Instead, Caleb used her request to portray her as unstable.
He forged messages implying she planned to steal Noah and flee.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“You were entering a combat zone.”
“I thought protecting you from distraction was protecting you.”
I looked away.
Every person in this story had justified secrecy as protection.
My father.
Emily.
Jonathan.
Even Mother.
“Secrets are what made this possible,” I said.
“I know.”
“Is there anything else?”
Emily took a folded page from her coat.
It was a letter Thomas had sent before his death.
Daniel must never inherit Meridian.
If the company survives, it will consume him.
Destroy the patents.
Destroy the vaults.
Choose your family over my legacy.
Emily had hidden the letter because the legitimate patents were worth billions.
Without them, Noah’s trust would contain only ordinary investments.
“You kept this because of the money?”
“At first.”
“Then because the patents included medical systems that could save lives.”
“Thomas wanted everything destroyed out of guilt.”
“I thought we could separate the good from the evil.”
The choice was no longer theoretical.
The overseas buyer now possessed enough data to recreate parts of Meridian’s technology.
Destroying our patents would not destroy theirs.
It would only prevent us from controlling the defense.
Elena called from the rail terminal.
Rebecca had arrived early.
Caleb’s transport was ten minutes away.
Then the tracker signal disappeared.
Caleb had cut the implant from his own wrist.
The prison van was found overturned beneath an overpass.
Two guards were injured.
Caleb was gone.
At the rail terminal, Rebecca walked into the open carrying a laptop.
She had not come to collect Caleb.
She had come to meet him.
They had planned the escape together.
A live feed appeared on Elena’s phone.
Caleb and Rebecca stood inside the Hale estate.
Mother’s home had been released from federal control that morning.
Behind them, flames climbed the library walls.
Caleb addressed the camera.
“Daniel, Father left one final vault beneath this house.”
“Come before the fire reaches it.”

“Bring Emily.”
“This time, we finish our family argument together.”
