Chapter 7 - THE EMERGENCY CUSTODY PETITION
Melissa filed an emergency petition the following Monday.
She claimed the teenagers were being financially abused.
She described canceled subscriptions as coercive control.
She claimed I denied medication, transportation, and communication.
None of it was true.
The children still had access to emergency calls through their devices.
School transportation continued.
Medication remained available through both biological parents.
The only losses were luxury phone plans, riding lessons, private gaming access, and expenses not assigned to me.
Her filing contained screenshots from Jason.
One showed the disabled console.
Another showed a list of canceled subscriptions.
A third showed Ethan’s broken airplane.
The caption said:
Rachel destroyed things to scare us.
Jason had photographed the pieces without explaining he broke them.
Daniel read the petition inside our attorney’s office.
His face became gray.
“She is using Ethan’s airplane.”
“She learned from Jason that the photo existed,” I said.
“Why would he lie?”
“Because truth has not been required from him.”
Daniel’s attorney, Simone Price, looked at him.
“Do you have evidence Jason broke it?”
Olivia had recorded part of the argument from the hallway.
Her video showed Jason throwing the airplane after Ethan refused to surrender a pair of headphones.
The model struck the fireplace.
Jason then looked toward Olivia and said,
“Tell your mom it was an accident.”
The room fell silent after the video ended.
Daniel covered his mouth.
I had not known Olivia possessed it.
She gave it to me that morning.
“I was afraid Dad would make me delete it,” she said.
That sentence hurt Daniel more than anything Melissa had filed.
His own household expected him to protect the wrong child from consequences.
At the custody hearing, the judge reviewed the full financial records.
She saw the custody agreement.
The reimbursements.
The messages from Melissa.
She read:
You are not her child.
She cannot make rules for you.
The emergency petition was denied.
Then the judge addressed both biological parents.
“Your conflict has encouraged these children to believe they may reject household safety rules whenever the adult enforcing them is not biologically related.”
“That ends immediately.”
She ordered family counseling.
She ordered Daniel and Melissa to use a monitored parenting application.
She prohibited either parent from directing the teenagers to disobey reasonable household rules.
Melissa left the courtroom furious.
