Chapter 1 - PUTTING THINGS BACK WHERE THEY BELONG

Daniel stood in the doorway of my office, staring at the cancellation list on my screen.

His face had lost all color.

“Rachel,” he repeated.

“What are you doing?”

I looked directly at him.

“Putting things back where they belong.”

He stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Jason’s phone returns to the plan Melissa is legally responsible for maintaining.”

“It means Alyssa’s riding lessons are no longer charged to my card.”

“It means the gaming subscriptions, streaming accounts, private tutoring, and sports fees I have been covering are finished.”

Daniel stared at me as if I had announced I was setting fire to the house.

“You cannot punish children over one argument.”

“This is not punishment.”

“Then what is it?”

“A boundary.”

He looked toward the hallway.

Jason’s shouting could already be heard from the living room.

“The internet is down.”

“My games are gone.”

“Dad.”

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

“You could have spoken to me first.”

“I have spoken to you for four years.”

“You called every act of disrespect an adjustment.”

“They are teenagers.”

“My children are not allowed to destroy their belongings, insult adults, or make someone cry because they are adjusting.”

“Jason was angry.”

“He smashed Ethan’s airplane.”

“He can replace it.”

“With what money?”

Daniel’s expression tightened.

“You are making this about finances.”

“No.”

“Jason made it about responsibility.”

“He said I was not his mother.”

“He is correct.”

“I am not.”

“I did not give birth to him.”

“I did not adopt him.”

“I have no legal authority over his medical care, education, discipline, or custody.”

“Yet somehow I became responsible for paying every bill his biological parents did not want to handle.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“You said you loved them.”

“I do.”

“Love is not a direct-deposit agreement.”

He looked at the list again.

“You canceled Alyssa’s phone too?”

“Yes.”

“She needs it for school.”

“She has a phone.”

“Her service transfers to you or Melissa tomorrow.”

“You know I cannot add two lines to my current plan without increasing the bill.”

“That sounds like something you and Melissa need to discuss.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You are my wife.”

“Yes.”

“Which means I should not have been secretly financing an arrangement you refused to manage.”

“I never asked you to pay for everything.”

“No.”

“You only allowed every emergency to reach me.”

“Jason needs cleats.”

“Alyssa needs braces.”

“Melissa forgot the school fee.”

“Your card is declined.”

“You always stood there looking overwhelmed until I solved it.”

“That is not fair.”

“Neither was teaching Ethan that someone could destroy what he made and return to the console I bought.”

The office door opened.

Jason stood there holding his controller.

“What did you do to my account?”

I looked at him.

“I canceled it.”

“You can’t.”

“I just did.”

He turned toward Daniel.

“Tell her to fix it.”

Daniel looked at me.

For one terrible second, I thought he would do exactly what he had always done.

He would ask me to restore the account for peace.

Instead, he said nothing.

Jason’s face hardened.

Then he spoke the sentence that revealed more than he intended.

“My mom said you would do this eventually.”

The room became silent.

I looked at Daniel.

“Which mom?”

May you like

Jason smiled coldly.

“My real one.”
