Chapter 17 - MELISSA’S APOLOGY

Melissa requested a meeting one year after the airplane was broken.
The family counselor attended.
Daniel sat beside me.
Jason and Alyssa were not present.
Melissa looked thinner.
Her real-estate business had slowed.
Legal fees had damaged her savings.
She had sold the Scottsdale house and moved into a townhouse.
She placed her hands on the table.
“I blamed Rachel for having the life I thought Daniel and I were supposed to have.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Our marriage ended before I met Rachel.”
“I know.”
“I did not know emotionally.”
She turned toward me.
“When the kids liked your house, I felt replaced.”
“When you paid for things I could not afford, I felt judged.”
“I told myself you were showing off.”
“I was not.”
“I know that now.”
She took a breath.
“I told Jason he did not owe you respect.”
“I told Alyssa your kindness had a price.”
“I asked them to find documents.”
“I encouraged them to treat your children as temporary.”
“I am sorry.”
I watched her carefully.
“Are you sorry because the court intervened?”
“At first, yes.”
The honesty surprised me.
“Now I am sorry because Jason thinks loyalty requires anger.”
“Alyssa apologizes every time she enjoys something in your home.”
“I did that.”
Daniel asked,
“Will you stop?”
“Yes.”
“Even when you are afraid?”
“I am learning how.”
I did not forgive her immediately.
I did not invite her into my home.
I accepted the apology as information.
Change would provide evidence later.
Before leaving, Melissa placed a small wooden airplane on the table.
Jason had given it to her.
He had finished the replacement model.
He told her he did not deserve to give it to Ethan yet.

“He said I should keep it until I stop making him fight my battles,” Melissa whispered.
For the first time, she understood that the child she used as a messenger had begun setting his own boundary.
