Chapter 5 - THE HOUSE MEETING

We held the family meeting on Friday evening.

Olivia sat beside Ethan.

Jason and Alyssa occupied the opposite sofa.

Daniel stood near the fireplace.

I remained in the armchair.

No one had access to a phone.

No television played in the background.

Jason looked bored.

Alyssa looked frightened.

I began with the simplest truth.

“This house has had different rules for different children.”

“That ends tonight.”

Jason rolled his eyes.

“You mean your kids get everything.”

“No.”

“My children receive consequences when they damage property, speak disrespectfully, or refuse responsibilities.”

“You and Alyssa will receive the same.”

“You can’t ground me.”

“You’re right.”

“I cannot legally ground you.”

“Your father can.”

Everyone looked toward Daniel.

He took a breath.

“Jason, the console is removed for one month.”

“You will use your savings to purchase materials for a new airplane.”

“You will work with Ethan to rebuild it if he agrees.”

Jason stared at him.

“You’re taking her side.”

“I am taking responsibility.”

“My mom said she would do this.”

Daniel’s voice remained steady.

“Your mother is not part of this household.”

“She is my real family.”

“So is everyone in this room.”

“No.”

“Ethan is not my brother.”

Ethan looked down.

Daniel moved closer.

“You have lived beside him for five years.”

“You do not have to feel close to him.”

“You do have to treat him safely.”

Jason folded his arms.

“I want to go to Mom’s.”

“You may call her after the meeting.”

Alyssa began crying.

“Are you canceling my riding lessons?”

“I canceled my payment,” I said.

“Your mother and father may continue them.”

“But Dad said he can’t afford them.”

“Then that activity may pause.”

“That’s not fair.”

Olivia looked at her.

“You ruined my markers.”

Alyssa wiped her face.

“They were just markers.”

“They cost eighty dollars,” Olivia said.

“That’s not the point.”

“You did it because you were angry at Mom.”

Alyssa looked toward Daniel.

He did not rescue her.

“You will replace them from your allowance,” he said.

“What allowance?”

“The one Rachel has been depositing into your account.”

Alyssa’s face changed.

She had believed Daniel provided it.

Many of the children’s assumptions came from things we never corrected.

I looked at both teenagers.

“I do not expect either of you to call me Mom.”

“I do not expect you to feel grateful every time I buy something.”

“I do expect basic respect.”

“From now on, your parents handle your major expenses.”

“I will provide food, shelter, safety, and ordinary household care while you are here.”

“Luxury items are not automatic.”

Jason laughed.

“So you admit you’re punishing us with money.”

“No.”

“I am no longer using money to imitate authority your father refused to give me.”

The sentence silenced the room.

May you like

Daniel flinched.

He deserved to.
