Chapter 3 - THE FATHER WHO CALLED SILENCE PEACE

I placed the phone before Daniel.

He saw the messages.

His shoulders dropped.

“You knew.”

“I knew Melissa was angry.”

“You knew she told Jason I had no authority.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she said my children were not his family.”

“I did not see that one.”

“It was forwarded to you.”

“I receive dozens of messages during work.”

“You answered it.”

Daniel read his own reply.

Please stop putting him in the middle.

Melissa responded:

Then stop letting Rachel act like she replaced me.

Daniel never wrote again.

He had asked Melissa politely to stop.

Then he allowed the behavior to continue.

“Why didn’t you show me?” I asked.

“I wanted to handle it.”

“You did not handle it.”

“I thought she would calm down.”

“Instead, Jason destroyed Ethan’s airplane.”

“I did not know it would go that far.”

“Ethan has been asking for months why the rules are different.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“I was trying to protect the children from conflict between homes.”

“You protected them from consequences.”

“That is not the same.”

“Every time they insulted me, you said they were adjusting.”

“Every time Melissa undermined me, you said responding would make things worse.”

“You made my children live inside disrespect so Jason and Alyssa would never feel uncomfortable.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with exhaustion.

“What was I supposed to do?”

“Parent.”

“They already have a mother.”

“They also have a father.”

He looked toward the closed office door.

“I was afraid they would stop coming here.”

The truth arrived quietly.

Melissa had threatened custody whenever Daniel challenged her.

She told him the teenagers would choose her home permanently.

Daniel believed tolerating their behavior kept him in their lives.

“You were afraid of losing them,” I said.

“Yes.”

“So you taught them they could keep you only if you never required anything from them.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I did not mean to.”

“Children learn what adults allow.”

He looked at me.

“What happens now?”

“Jason replaces Ethan’s airplane.”

“He apologizes.”

“He loses access to the console until he earns it back.”

“Alyssa replaces Olivia’s markers.”

“She apologizes too.”

“And Melissa?”

“She pays the expenses assigned to her in the custody agreement.”

Daniel became pale again.

“You reviewed the agreement?”

“I’m about to.”

He stood.

“Rachel, please do not turn this into a legal war.”

“I did not create a legal arrangement where I had responsibilities but no authority.”

“You did.”

He left the office.

I pulled up the custody agreement from our household files.

Daniel and Melissa shared school and medical expenses equally.

Extracurricular activities required written approval from both parents.

Neither parent could demand payment from a stepparent.

Melissa had paid almost nothing for two years.

Daniel’s records claimed he had covered his half.

In reality, most payments came from my personal card.

Then I found something worse.

Several reimbursement requests had been submitted to Melissa.

She had paid them.

The repayment went into Daniel’s private account.

He had allowed me to pay the original bills.

Then he kept her reimbursements.
