Chapter 14 - THE DIVORCE MEDIATION
Daniel and I entered mediation six months after he moved out.
We had not filed final divorce papers.
We had not committed to reconciliation.
The mediator asked each of us what we wanted.
Daniel answered first.
“I want my marriage.”
The mediator looked at me.
“I want a marriage that does not require me to disappear inside it.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
I continued.
“I will not return to being the primary provider for children I cannot guide.”
“I will not accept secret transfers to Melissa.”
“I will not share a house with teenagers who are encouraged to reject safety rules.”
“I will not allow my children to experience a lower standard of protection because Daniel fears conflict.”
The mediator asked whether I wanted Jason and Alyssa excluded from the home.
“No.”
“They are children.”
“They need structure.”
“They also need a father who handles the conflict their mother creates.”
Daniel spoke.
“I accept that.”
The mediator asked what Daniel required.
He looked at me.
“I need financial dignity.”
“That does not mean control.”
“It means I need to contribute in ways that are visible and agreed upon.”
“I need Rachel not to solve every problem before I have a chance.”
The request was fair.
My competence sometimes became control without intention.
When Daniel hesitated, I acted.
When he struggled, I paid.
Then I resented him for relying on me.
“I can ask before solving,” I said.
He nodded.
“I also need the children to know my income is not a joke.”
“I have never called it one.”
“No.”
“But I did.”
The real humiliation came from inside him.
Melissa had only learned where to press.
We created a possible reconciliation plan.
Separate accounts.
A joint household account.
Written responsibility for every child’s expenses.
No payments to former partners outside legal obligations without disclosure.
Equal household rules.
Family counseling.
A six-month review before Daniel returned.
