Chapter 6 - MELISSA ARRIVES

Melissa reached the house before the meeting ended.
She did not knock.
She used the code Daniel had never removed from the front door.
The lock rejected her.
The locksmith had changed every code connected to former users.
She pounded against the door.
“Daniel.”
“Open this now.”
Jason ran toward the foyer.
Daniel stopped him.
“I will speak with her.”
Melissa entered after he unlocked the door manually.
She wore white slacks, a silk blouse, and the expression of someone arriving to recover property.
She looked directly at me.
“What have you done to my children?”
“I stopped paying several optional expenses.”
“They called me crying.”
“Then you know they need phone plans.”
“You canceled medical access.”
“No.”
“I removed my card from the pharmacy account.”
“Daniel and you remain authorized.”
Melissa turned toward him.
“You let her do this?”
Daniel looked tired.
“Yes.”
Her face sharpened.
“You are choosing her again.”
“No.”
“I am following our custody agreement.”
She laughed.
“You have never cared about that agreement.”
The room became silent.
Daniel glanced toward the children.
“Not here.”
Melissa ignored him.
“She paid because she wanted control.”
“I paid because you repeatedly claimed you could not,” I said.
“You enjoyed playing the generous stepmother.”
“No.”
“I was trying to keep the household functioning.”
“Then stop pretending this is noble.”
“You are furious because a teenager told you the truth.”
Jason stood behind her.
He looked relieved.
Melissa had arrived to restore the old story.
I was the controlling outsider.
She was the protective mother.
Daniel was the weak man caught between us.
“Did you tell Jason to remind me whose family the house belongs to?” I asked.
Melissa’s eyes flickered.
“I told him he had a father.”
“This house belongs to me.”
She smiled.
“That must make you feel powerful.”
“No.”
“It makes your instruction factually wrong.”
Melissa looked at Daniel.
“You told me the house became marital property.”
“I said we lived here as a family.”
“You said Rachel would never make you leave.”
I looked at him.
He stared at the floor.
Another promise made with something he did not own.
Melissa continued.
“The children are coming with me.”
Jason moved toward her.
Alyssa hesitated.
Daniel said,
“This is my parenting weekend.”
“They do not feel safe.”
“Because their subscriptions were canceled?”
“Because your wife is retaliating.”
Daniel finally looked at her.
“Rachel has been paying expenses assigned to us.”
“That ends now.”
Melissa’s expression became colder.
“You cannot afford their life without her.”
Daniel said nothing.
The cruelty was accurate.
That was why it landed.
Melissa took Jason’s hand.
“Get your things.”
Daniel stepped between them and the stairs.
“No.”
“You do not control this house,” she said.
“No.”
“But I am their father.”
“And the custody order says they remain tonight.”
Melissa removed her phone.
“Then I am calling my attorney.”
May you like
I looked at her.
“Please do.”
