Chapter 9 - THE HUSBAND WHO STOPPED LOOKING TOO SOON

Elena asked Ethan to tell her everything he had done after she disappeared.

He wanted to describe the searches first.

The investigators.

The trips.

The rewards.

The hundreds of calls.

Instead, he began with the failure.

“I stopped searching the estate after eight months.”

Elena looked at him.

“Why?”

“Victor obtained a restraining order.”

“That would not have stopped you before.”

“No.”

Ethan lowered his eyes.

“He showed me a video.”

It appeared to show Elena entering a hotel in Lisbon with another man.

The woman’s face was unclear.

She wore Elena’s necklace.

Victor claimed Elena had started another life.

Ethan knew the footage could be false.

But he had spent months exhausted, angry, and unable to see Lily.

Part of him accepted the story because endless uncertainty had become unbearable.

“I hated you,” he admitted.

“For leaving?”

“For making me feel foolish for believing you.”

Elena remained quiet.

“I filed for divorce after a year,” he continued.

“The court never completed it because you could not be served.”

“I dated someone briefly.”

“Mara?”

“No.”

“Mara was investigating.”

“The woman’s name was Rachel.”

“It lasted four months.”

Elena looked toward the window.

“Victor showed me photographs of you together.”

“I thought you had moved on.”

“I tried.”

The words hurt them both.

Ethan continued.

“I returned to the search after Lily’s first supervised call.”

“She said you still sang to her.”

“Victor ended the call.”

“I understood that she was speaking in present tense.”

“That is when I hired Mara and Samuel.”

Elena looked at him.

“So you did stop.”

“Yes.”

“Then you began again.”

“Yes.”

“Why tell me the worst part first?”

“Because if we rebuild anything, I cannot begin with the version that makes me heroic.”

Elena’s expression softened slightly.

Captivity had taught her that polished stories were dangerous.

Ethan’s imperfect truth felt safer.

“I hated you too,” she said.

“For believing the note.”

“For not breaking down every door.”

“I know.”

“I also knew Victor controlled what you saw.”

“Both things lived in me.”

Ethan nodded.

“They can.”

He did not ask whether she still loved him.

May you like

Love had survived somewhere beneath the anger.

That did not mean it was ready to become a marriage again.
