Chapter 1 - THE KEY BENEATH THE MARBLE

Ethan covered Lily’s trembling hand with his own.

Together, they turned the tiny brass key.

For one second, nothing happened.

Then something heavy released beneath the marble.

A deep metallic click echoed through the foyer.

Victor Whitmore’s face changed.

“Step away from that floor,” he ordered.

Ethan looked up.

Victor stood beside the staircase with four security men behind him.

His expensive charcoal suit was perfectly pressed.

His expression was not.

Fear had cracked through the polished calm.

Ethan’s private investigator, Mara Quinn, stepped between Victor and the child.

“We have a court order permitting Mr. Cole to recover Lily’s belongings.”

Victor pointed toward the hidden lock.

“That does not include damaging the property.”

Lily tightened her fingers around Ethan’s hand.

“Mommy said the key opens the truth.”

Ethan stared at the thin seam between the marble tiles.

He remembered Elena wearing the key around her neck.

She had called it an old family keepsake.

She had never told him what it opened.

Ethan pressed his palm against the tile.

A square section of the floor rose half an inch.

Cold air escaped through the gap.

His second investigator, former detective Samuel Reed, found a recessed iron handle.

He pulled.

The marble panel lifted slowly on concealed hinges.

Beneath it was a narrow staircase descending into darkness.

The air smelled of stone, dust, and something medicinal.

Victor moved down the final stair of the grand staircase.

“There is nothing down there.”

Lily looked at him.

“You said Mommy was sleeping.”

Victor stopped.

Ethan turned toward his daughter.

“What did he tell you?”

Lily pressed her face against Ethan’s shoulder.

“He said she got sick because she tried to leave.”

“He said I had to be quiet or she would never wake up.”

Ethan rose.

Every instinct inside him demanded that he run down the hidden stairs.

Mara caught his arm.

“We go carefully.”

Samuel removed a flashlight.

Victor’s security men moved closer.

Mara displayed the court order again.

“If anyone interferes, we call the county tactical unit and report obstruction.”

Victor laughed.

“You are standing inside my home.”

Ethan looked at him.

“This house belonged to Elena.”

Victor’s expression sharpened.

“My sister abandoned you.”

“No.”

“You told the world she did.”

The investigators descended first.

Ethan followed with Lily in his arms.

The staircase ended at a steel door.

Scratches covered its inner frame.

Someone had tried to claw through the paint.

Lily reached toward it.

“Mommy is behind there.”

Ethan placed his ear against the metal.

At first, he heard only silence.

Then came a faint sound.

Three slow knocks.

A pause.

Then three more.

It was the signal Elena and Ethan had used during their marriage whenever one of them needed help without alarming Lily.

Ethan’s knees nearly gave way.

“Elena?”

Something struck the other side of the door.

Then a woman’s weak voice whispered his name.

“Ethan.”
