Chapter 11 - LILY’S NIGHTMARES

Lily slept between Ethan and Elena during the first week after the rescue.
Whenever a floorboard creaked, she woke screaming.
She refused to walk across marble.
She hid keys beneath her pillow.
One night, Ethan found her sitting beside the bedroom door.
“What are you doing?”
“Listening.”
“For what?”
“Uncle Victor’s shoes.”
Ethan sat on the floor.
“Victor cannot enter this building.”
“He has police watching him.”
“He had police before.”
The words exposed the weakness of adult reassurance.
Lily had seen officials accept Victor’s documents.
She had watched strangers call him her guardian.
Safety could not be restored by asking her to trust another uniform.
Ethan placed his room key in her hand.
“You can keep this tonight.”
She looked at it.
“What if you need it?”
“I will knock.”
“You’re the dad.”
“That does not mean I enter every locked door.”
Lily crawled into his lap.
“Mommy’s door did not open from inside.”
“I know.”
The next morning, Elena asked to remove every interior lock from the apartment.
Her therapist advised against immediate changes driven by fear.
Instead, they installed locks that could be opened from both sides in an emergency.
Lily helped test each one.
The process gave her something captivity had denied.
Participation.
Elena began physical therapy.
Her ankle had permanent nerve damage.
Some days, she could walk with a cane.
Other days, pain forced her into a wheelchair.
She hated being helped without warning.
Ethan learned to ask before touching the chair.
He learned that opening a door for her could feel kind one day and controlling the next.
Healing did not follow consistent rules.
It required attention.
Mara visited with a folder.
Victor’s trial date had been set.
His attorneys planned to argue that Elena created the underground room with Arthur for personal security.
They claimed she chose to remain there during a marital crisis.
“They will use my note,” Elena said.
“They will say I wanted to disappear.”
Mara nodded.
“We have the recording of Victor dictating it.”
Elena stared at her.
“What recording?”
“Arthur’s security system captured audio from the garage.”
May you like
Victor had not known his father installed a microphone beneath the workbench.
The recording contained Elena screaming Ethan’s name while men dragged her away.
