Ethan moved into a separate apartment near Elena and Lily.
He did not assume the marriage would continue because Elena had been found.
The law still recognized them as husband and wife.
Their lives did not.
Elena needed space without being abandoned.
Ethan needed to support her without turning support into a claim.
They attended counseling separately.
Months later, they began joint sessions.
Elena asked the question he feared most.
“Would you have married Rachel if I had remained missing?”
Ethan answered honestly.
“Possibly.”
She looked away.
“I hate that answer.”
“I know.”
“I also believe it.”
“That is why I gave it.”
Ethan asked his own question.
“Did you stop loving me?”
“Sometimes.”
The answer hurt.
He accepted it.
“I loved the memory of you.”
“I hated the man Victor described.”
“I feared the man in the photographs.”
“I did not know which version was real.”
Their marriage had been poisoned from opposite sides.
Victor did not need them to believe one complete lie.
He needed them to doubt enough pieces of the truth.
Ethan did not ask Elena to renew vows.
He asked whether she wanted dinner on Friday.
She said yes.
A year later, they took a short trip with Lily.
Two years later, Ethan moved into Elena’s house.
He kept his apartment for another six months.
