Chapter 3 - THE NOTE THAT ENDED A MARRIAGE

Paramedics cut the chain from Elena’s ankle.
They found injection marks along her arms.
Her blood pressure was dangerously low.
She had been given sedatives repeatedly.
Before allowing herself to be carried upstairs, Elena reached beneath the cot.
She removed a thin metal box.
Inside was her wedding ring.
The same ring Ethan had found beside the note three years earlier.
He stared at it.
“How did this get back here?”
Victor answered from the doorway.
“I returned it to her.”
Elena shook her head.
“He made me remove it.”
“He dictated the note.”
Ethan remembered every word.
Ethan,
I cannot live inside this marriage anymore.
Do not look for me.
Take care of Lily.
I need to disappear.
The note had destroyed him.
Police treated Elena’s disappearance as voluntary because security footage showed her leaving the estate before sunrise.
The woman in that footage wore Elena’s coat.
Her face remained hidden beneath a scarf.
Victor had claimed Elena sent Lily to relatives for emotional stability.
Then his attorneys produced a temporary guardianship order.
Ethan spent three years fighting to see his own daughter.
Each hearing ended with another delay.
Another expert.
Another judge connected to the Whitmore Foundation.
Elena looked at him from the stretcher.
“The woman in the footage was Victor’s assistant.”
“Monica Shaw.”
“She wore my clothes.”
Ethan’s hands shook.
“Why didn’t Lily tell anyone you were here?”
Victor had kept the child moving between the estate and a private school.
Every phone call with Ethan was supervised.
When Lily tried to mention the hidden room, Victor ended the calls.
He told her that Elena would be punished if she spoke.
“He showed me Mommy on a camera,” Lily whispered.
“He said she could hear me.”
“He said if I was good, she would get better.”
Elena reached toward her daughter.
“I heard you singing through the speaker.”
“That kept me alive.”
Police officers arrived.
Victor’s security team surrendered their weapons.
Victor’s attorney appeared before the first ambulance left.
He argued that Elena lacked mental capacity to make accusations.
Mara handed him photographs of the chain.
Samuel handed police the camera’s storage unit.
Victor’s attorney stopped speaking.
Ethan climbed into the ambulance with Elena and Lily.
As the doors closed, Elena looked back toward the estate.
“The trust archive is still inside.”
“What is in it?” Ethan asked.

“Proof that Victor did not only imprison me.”
“He killed our father.”
