The trial began eleven months after the estate fire.
Victor entered the courtroom wearing a navy suit.
He looked rested.
Confident.
Almost offended by the inconvenience.
The prosecution opened with the marble floor.
Photographs showed the hidden entrance.
The chain.
The cot.
The medication.
The camera.
Monica testified about the false disappearance.
Dominic testified about the psychiatric reports.
Judge Kline testified under a cooperation agreement.
Then Lily’s recorded forensic interview was played privately to the jury.
She did not enter the courtroom.
No one forced her to face Victor.
Her small voice described hearing her mother cry through a speaker.
She described being told Ethan stopped looking.
She described hiding the brass key inside her dress.
Victor’s attorney attacked Elena’s mental health.
He displayed the disappearance note.
He described her as suspicious and emotionally unstable after Arthur’s death.
Then prosecutors played the garage recording.
Victor’s own voice filled the courtroom.
Keep Elena alive until she opens the archive.
The defense changed direction.
They claimed Victor acted to protect the family company from Elena’s accusations.
Arthur’s video showed those accusations were true.
The attorney questioned Ethan.
“You filed for divorce.”
“Yes.”
“You dated another woman.”
“Yes.”
“You eventually stopped searching.”
“For several months.”
“Then perhaps you believed Elena left voluntarily.”
“For a time, I accepted the evidence Victor manufactured.”
“You failed your wife.”
“Yes.”
The answer weakened the attack.
Ethan did not defend his pride.
He gave the jury nothing to expose that he had not already admitted.
Then Elena took the stand.
Victor looked at her for the first time since the rescue.
“You were always dramatic,” he said.
The judge ordered him silent.
Elena faced the jury.
“My brother did not keep me alive because he loved me.”
“He kept me alive because he needed my fingerprint.”
