Chapter 8: The Silent Complicity

“Wait,” Arturo said, stepping forward, his hands raised in surrender. “Alejandro, please. Think about the scandal. Think about the press.”
Alejandro stopped dialing and looked at his father. The disappointment in his eyes was heavier than anger. “You knew. You knew she was poisoning Valeria, and you did nothing.”
Arturo swallowed hard, beads of sweat forming on his brow. “I didn’t know about the poison, I swear to God! I only found out after the fall on the stairs.
I saw her push Valeria. I confronted her, and she told me about the trust. She said if Valeria had the baby, we would be cast out. I... I was a coward, Alejandro. I’m so sorry.”
Valeria let out a choked sob from the bed. “You watched me suffer. You watched me fall down those stairs, and you just walked away.”
