Chapter 12: The Aftermath

Once the room was cleared of the police and his parents, Alejandro immediately called for an ambulance. The stress of the confrontation had caused Valeria to experience sharp abdominal cramps, and the color had completely drained from her face.
“Hold on, mi amor,” Alejandro whispered, sitting on the edge of the bed and gently taking her cold hand in his. “The ambulance is coming.
You are safe now. I promise you, she will never come near you again.”
“The baby,” Valeria whimpered, tears of pain and exhaustion leaking from her eyes. “Please, Alejandro, make sure the baby is okay.”
“The baby is going to be fine. You are so strong. You protected our child.” Alejandro kissed her knuckles, tears finally breaking free and rolling down his own cheeks.
He thought of how close he had come to confronting her about a fabricated affair, how easily Esther’s lies had poisoned his mind just as her teas had poisoned his wife’s body.
“I am so sorry I doubted you. I am so sorry I wasn’t here.”

Paramedics arrived shortly after, loading Valeria onto a stretcher with the utmost care.
Alejandro refused to leave her side, riding in the back of the ambulance, holding her hand tightly as they sped down the mountain toward the city hospital.
