Chapter 5 - THE CAPSULES IN THE SILVER BOX

Police collected every medicine bottle inside Mercer House.

The silver capsule box beside Gabriel’s bed contained no vitamins.

The pills included a sedative and a drug capable of causing confusion, balance problems, and short-term memory loss.

Dr. Leonard Shaw had never listed either medication in Gabriel’s official chart.

His private files told a different story.

They described an experimental cognitive treatment authorized by Camille.

A competent adult’s spouse cannot secretly authorize medication.

Dr. Shaw knew that.

He received eight hundred thousand dollars from the Langley Foundation.

He also held a signed agreement promising him control of a private neurological clinic after Gabriel was declared incapable.

Detective Bennett showed Gabriel photographs found in Camille’s office.

He appeared asleep on sofas.

Stumbling beside the staircase.

Sitting with an empty whiskey glass.

Each image supported the story of decline.

Gabriel remembered those nights.

He usually drank one glass.

Camille gave him a capsule.

Then hours disappeared.

The next morning, she described things he had supposedly said.

He apologized for conversations he could not remember.

He allowed her to attend more meetings.

He surrendered more control because he feared becoming like his father, who suffered from dementia before death.

Iris looked at Evelyn’s ledger.

“Your father did not have dementia.”

Gabriel stared at her.

“What?”

“My mother wrote that his medical records were changed.”

Thomas Mercer had died six years earlier.

He became confused during his final months.

Richard recommended Dr. Shaw.

Camille managed the medication.

Gabriel believed illness had taken his father quickly.

Police located a preserved blood sample from a research program.

The laboratory found the same sedative used on Gabriel.

A second medication increased stroke risk.

Thomas Mercer’s death became a homicide investigation.
