Chapter 11 - IRIS VANISHES

Iris left the board meeting at 7:03 p.m.
Her security driver planned to take her to Owenâs apartment.
They never arrived.
The vehicle was found in an underground garage.
The driver lay unconscious behind the wheel.
Irisâs phone had been crushed beneath a tire.
Detective Bennett called Gabriel.
Every instinct told him to join the search.
Bennett ordered him to remain at the command center.
âRichard wants you moving without thinking.â
She was right.
A private jet connected to Langley Preservation filed a flight plan to Canada.
Irisâs name appeared on the passenger list.
Federal agents stopped the aircraft.
Iris was not aboard.
Her passport, clothing, and bloodstained scarf were inside.
The flight was a distraction.
Ocean Crest vehicles entered three abandoned Mercer properties.
Police searched the first.
Empty.
The second contained burned account files.
The third was an unfinished seaside resort with miles of maintenance tunnels.
Iris was found beneath the old ballroom.
Her hands were tied.
A camera faced a wooden chair.
Richardâs son, Preston Langley, wanted a recorded confession.
The script said Iris invented the theft after stealing Camilleâs jewelry.
It said Evelyn drank before driving.
It said Gabriel paid Iris to destroy his wife during divorce negotiations.
Iris refused to read it.
Preston struck her.
Then he called Camille from a secure phone.
Camille said:
âDo not damage her face again.â
âShe must look believable.â
The device they planned to use against Iris recorded the conversation.
Police entered before Preston could move her.
He escaped into a service elevator.
The old safety system stopped between floors.
Evelyn had approved the system years earlier.
The building trapped the man helping silence her daughter.
Iris spent three days in the hospital.
Gabriel waited outside until she asked for him.
âYou didnât enter without permission,â she said.
âNo.â
âThat is progress.â
âI am sorry.â
âFor the kidnapping?â
âFor creating a world where the Langleys had this much access.â
âThat part belongs to you.â
He nodded.
âWhat do you need?â
âRestore every missing dollar.â
âProtect the witnesses.â
âAnd do not turn your guilt into the main story.â
âI wonât.â
âThen we can continue working.â
May you like
It was not forgiveness.
It was a boundary with a narrow door.
