Chapter 4 - THE MAN OUTSIDE THE GATES

Richard Langley arrived before sunset.

His black sedan stopped beyond the locked iron gates.

Two attorneys sat behind him.

A private security vehicle followed.

Richard called Gabriel.

“Open the gate.”

“No.”

“My daughter was assaulted.”

“She is being questioned about assaulting Iris.”

“You pushed Camille into a pool.”

“Yes.”

“And I have given police a complete statement.”

Richard’s voice became colder.

“You have no idea what public exposure will do to your company.”

“If the company depends on concealing crimes, it deserves the damage.”

“You are emotional.”

Gabriel had heard that word many times.

Camille used it whenever he questioned strange documents.

Dr. Shaw used it when Gabriel asked about the headaches.

Matthew used it when Gabriel challenged unusual expenses.

Emotional.

Overworked.

Confused.

The vocabulary of concern had become a cage.

Richard lowered his voice.

“Call off the police.”

“Send the employee away.”

“We can settle this privately.”

“No.”

“You are choosing a housekeeper over your wife.”

“I am choosing evidence over your family.”

Richard remained silent.

Then he said:

“Your father would be ashamed.”

Gabriel looked toward the greenhouse where police carried evidence boxes into the light.

“My father trusted Evelyn Monroe.”

“You threatened her.”

The line went quiet.

Richard entered only after Detective Bennett allowed him through the gate.

He walked into the living room as though he still controlled the building.

Camille rushed toward him.

“Daddy.”

He placed one hand on her shoulder.

“Do not say anything else.”

“She found Mother’s files.”

Richard’s fingers tightened.

“You are confused.”

“No.”

“You told me to force Iris to sign the confession.”

Richard glanced toward the officers.

Camille realized too late that he intended to distance himself.

“My daughter is in shock,” he said.

Detective Bennett smiled without warmth.

“The Langley family appears to experience confusion whenever cameras are present.”

Officers searched Richard’s briefcase.

Inside were unsigned medical affidavits.

They declared Gabriel incompetent.

The reports described aggressive behavior, alcohol abuse, memory failure, and paranoia toward his wife.

A future court petition named Camille temporary controller of the Mercer Family Trust.

Richard’s law firm had prepared every page.

Dr. Shaw had already signed the medical certification.

The date remained blank.
