Chapter 3 - THE ARCHIVIST WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Iris had a degree in forensic accounting.

Gabriel had never known.

After Evelyn’s death, Iris returned to Newport to care for her younger brother, Owen.

Owen had a neurological condition that required expensive treatment.

Mercer House offered housing and medical coverage.

Camille placed Iris in the archival department.

Then she gradually assigned her domestic duties.

Gabriel assumed Iris preferred a quiet position after losing her mother.

He had never asked.

At the hospital, Detective Bennett asked Iris how she discovered the missing money.

Iris explained that the restoration fund paid for preservation work at historic Mercer properties.

The fund should have been independently protected.

Instead, millions had been transferred to companies connected to Camille’s father, Richard Langley.

Langley Preservation Consulting.

Ocean Crest Security.

Newport Cultural Development.

The invoices listed masonry repair, historical research, and structural surveys.

Much of the work never occurred.

Gabriel sat near the door.

His face was pale.

“Who authorized the transfers?”

“Your chief financial officer.”

“Matthew Crane?”

Iris nodded.

Matthew had been Gabriel’s closest friend for twenty years.

They attended school together.

They built Mercer Urban Development together.

Matthew stood beside Gabriel when his father died.

Gabriel felt something inside him turn cold.

Iris continued.

“The second approval came from Camille’s digital credentials.”

Camille claimed her access had been stolen.

Iris removed a thin memory card from beneath the protective case of her phone.

“My mother kept a parallel ledger.”

Detective Bennett placed the card inside an evidence bag.

Evelyn’s files documented unusual transfers dating back six years.

The first occurred shortly after Gabriel married Camille.

The final entries concerned a secret revision to the Mercer Family Trust.

“What revision?” Gabriel asked.

Iris looked at him carefully.

“One declaring you mentally incapable of managing the estate.”

Gabriel almost laughed.

Then he remembered the missing evenings.

The headaches.

The conversations Camille insisted had happened.

She told him he was exhausted.

She told him he had agreed to contracts while half asleep.

She began attending his medical appointments.

She persuaded him to see Dr. Leonard Shaw, a neurologist recommended by her father.

Dr. Shaw diagnosed stress-related memory loss.

He prescribed vitamins and advised Camille to supervise Gabriel’s schedule.

Iris opened Evelyn’s final handwritten note.

Mr. Langley says Gabriel only needs to look unstable long enough for Camille to activate the trust.

Dr. Shaw is helping.

If I disappear, check the old greenhouse recorder.

The old greenhouse stood beyond the east garden.

It had been closed since Evelyn’s death.

Camille claimed the foundation was unsafe.

Detective Bennett requested a search warrant.

When officers entered, they found the visible recorder empty.

The hard drive had been removed.

Iris pointed toward the irrigation cabinet.

Behind a rusted valve sat a second drive.

Her mother had hidden it.

The final recovered video showed Evelyn standing inside the greenhouse with Richard Langley and Camille.

Evelyn held a folder against her chest.

Richard said:

“You should have accepted the retirement package.”

Evelyn answered:

“You are stealing from employees, donors, and the Mercer family.”

Camille stepped closer.

“You are forgetting who allows your daughter to live on this property.”

“My daughter earns her place.”

“Your son’s treatment costs more than your family could pay in ten lifetimes.”

Evelyn did not move.

“You are using a sick boy to threaten his mother.”

Richard smiled.

“I am explaining consequences.”

Evelyn looked toward the hidden camera.

“I sent copies.”

Camille’s expression changed.
