Chapter 6 - Robert Mercer’s Last Promise

Emily held the envelope for almost a full minute before opening it.
The paper inside was thick and yellowed with age.
Robert Mercer had written the letter by hand.
Emily, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect your mother.
Her vision blurred.
Daniel stood beside her without speaking.
Emily continued.
Robert explained that Anna had discovered unusual transfers while cleaning his private office.
At first she believed the paperwork was meaningless.
Then she noticed the same company names appearing repeatedly.
She told Robert.
Robert investigated quietly.
The trail led to Charles Vale.
But before Robert could confront him publicly, Margaret’s necklace disappeared.
Charles claimed he found it in Anna’s suitcase.
Anna was fired.
Her credibility vanished overnight.
Robert later discovered the necklace accusation had been engineered to silence her.
By then Anna had disappeared.
Robert spent years searching for her.
During that search, he learned Anna had given birth to Emily.
The letter ended with a promise.
You are my daughter.
The Mercer Family Trust recognizes every biological child equally.
If your identity is ever proven, no board member, spouse, or heir may legally exclude you from your share.
Daniel looked up.
Margaret whispered, “The trust.”
Daniel nodded.
The Mercer Family Trust controlled forty-one percent of Mercer Holdings.
Daniel currently exercised nearly all voting authority attached to those shares.
If Emily was legally recognized as Robert’s daughter, half of that authority could transfer to her.
Margaret suddenly understood.
“Vanessa wasn’t just protecting her father.”
Daniel folded the letter.
“She was protecting what she expected to control after marrying me.”
Emily looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
Daniel hesitated.
“My prenuptial agreement gives my spouse no direct company ownership.”
“Then why would my existence matter?”
“Because of an emergency succession clause.”
Daniel explained that if he died or became incapacitated without children, his spouse would temporarily manage his trust voting rights until the board appointed a permanent trustee.
Vanessa had been eleven days away from becoming that spouse.
Emily felt sick.
“So if nobody knew I existed…”
“Vanessa would have had a path to control.”
Margaret whispered, “And Charles would control Vanessa.”
Owen laughed from across the room.
Everyone turned.
“That’s what you think this is?”
Daniel walked toward him.
“What am I missing?”
Owen looked at Emily.
“Ask why Robert never changed the succession clause.”
Daniel said nothing.
Owen continued.
“Ask why he hid the paternity test instead of filing it.”
Emily’s pulse quickened.
Then Owen delivered the next blow.
“Because Robert wasn’t afraid of Charles.”
He looked directly at Margaret.
“He was afraid of someone in his own family.”
Margaret went white.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?”
Owen smiled.
“Check the date Robert died.”
Daniel froze.
May you like
Twelve years earlier, Robert Mercer had died when his car lost control on a mountain road.
The same mountain road where Anna’s car had supposedly crashed years before.
