Chapter 18 - The Woman Who Came Back

Evelyn Mercer was waiting in Robert’s old study.

She was seventy-five.

Thin.

Elegant.

Silver hair pulled into a low knot.

She stood beside the hidden desk compartment as if she had been there yesterday.

Daniel entered first.

Emily followed.

Margaret stopped in the doorway.

For several seconds, the two older women stared at each other.

Margaret whispered, “You’re alive.”

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“So are you.”

Daniel moved between them.

“Why did you come here?”

“To end this before Charles does.”

Emily studied her.

“Are you Vanessa’s mother?”

“Yes.”

“Did you kill Robert?”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“No.”

“But you followed him.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn told them Robert called her that night.

He wanted her to testify against Charles.

He had discovered Charles was using the old foundation scandal to siphon money.

Robert offered Evelyn immunity from exposure if she cooperated.

She agreed to meet.

Then Charles learned about it.

“What happened on the mountain?”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I begged Robert not to go to authorities.”

“Why?”

“Because Vanessa would have learned everything.”

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“She deserved the truth.”

“She was twenty-three.”

“She was already helping Charles.”

Evelyn flinched.

She admitted arguing with Robert beside the road.

Robert drove away furious.

Minutes later, Evelyn saw his car lose control.

She stopped.

Robert was injured but conscious.

Emily whispered, “Did you call for help?”

Evelyn began to cry.

“No.”

The same choice Vanessa had made.

The same cowardice passing from one generation to the next.

“Why?”

“Because Robert told me the brakes were failing.”

Evelyn knew immediately that Charles had arranged it.

If she called police, Charles would expose her involvement in the foundation fraud.

So she left.

Robert’s damaged car later rolled farther down the slope.

He died before rescuers arrived.

Daniel turned away.

Emily saw the devastation in his face.

Evelyn continued.

“I spent twelve years hiding because Charles controlled everything.”

“No,” Emily said.

“You hid because hiding was easier.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“You sound like Anna.”

Emily stiffened.

“You knew my mother?”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

Evelyn’s eyes shifted.

That single movement told Emily there was more.

“Where is my mother?”

Evelyn reached into her handbag.

She removed an envelope.

“I saw Anna after the crash.”

Emily stopped breathing.

“What crash?”

“Her crash.”

“You said she died?”

“I never said that.”

Emily stepped closer.

“Then say it now.”

May you like

Evelyn handed her the envelope.

“Your mother survived.”
