Chapter 1 - The Words Vanessa Should Never Have Said

No one moved after the security footage ended.
Vanessa stood beneath the chandelier with her face completely drained of color.
Emily remained beside the brown leather handbag, one palm still pressed against the cheek Vanessa had struck.
Daniel stared at the frozen image on the screen.
Vanessa’s hand was clearly visible inside Emily’s bag.
The diamond necklace was between her fingers.
There was no misunderstanding.
There was no missing context.
There was no way to explain it away.
Daniel turned slowly.
“You framed her.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Daniel, I can explain.”
“Then explain.”
Her lips parted.
Nothing came out.
Margaret Mercer, Daniel’s mother, stepped forward and picked up the necklace with trembling fingers.
It had belonged to Daniel’s grandmother.
For nearly sixty years, it had been one of the Mercer family’s most recognizable heirlooms.
Margaret looked from the necklace to Vanessa.
“Why?”
Vanessa’s eyes flicked toward Emily.
That single glance was enough for Daniel to notice something strange.
It wasn’t hatred.
It was fear.
Daniel stepped between them.
“Why Emily?”
Vanessa suddenly recovered enough to lift her chin.
“She’s manipulating all of you.”
Emily stared at her.
“I don’t even know you.”
Vanessa laughed once.
It was short and bitter.
“That’s the lie you’ve been telling since you walked into this house.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“What are you talking about?”
Vanessa ignored him.
She looked directly at Emily.
Then she said something that made Emily’s blood run cold.
“You should have stayed buried with your mother.”
Emily stopped breathing.
Margaret’s hand jerked so violently that the necklace nearly slipped from her fingers.
Daniel noticed.
“Mother?”
Margaret didn’t answer.
Emily stepped toward Vanessa.
“What did you say?”
Vanessa realized immediately that she had revealed too much.
She grabbed her purse.
Daniel blocked her path.
“You’re not leaving.”
“You can’t hold me here.”
“I’m not holding you here.”
Daniel pointed toward the entrance.
“I’m telling you our engagement is over.”
A stunned murmur moved through the guests.
Vanessa stared at him.
Their wedding was supposed to take place in eleven days.
Hundreds of invitations had already been sent.
The ceremony had been planned for nearly a year.
Daniel removed his engagement ring from the chain he wore beneath his shirt and placed it on the marble table.
“You assaulted an employee.”
He pointed toward the screen.
“You planted stolen property in her bag.”
Then his voice lowered.
“And somehow you know something about her mother that I don’t.”
Vanessa’s confidence cracked.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
Daniel’s eyes became cold.
“No.”
He looked toward Emily.
“But I’m going to find out.”
Vanessa moved toward the door.
As she passed Emily, she leaned close enough that only Emily could hear her.
“You came here looking for the truth.”
Emily froze.
Vanessa continued walking.
Then she whispered one final sentence.
“Your mother found it too.”
The front doors closed behind her.
Emily slowly turned toward Margaret.
The older woman was staring at the diamond necklace as if she were holding a ghost.
Emily reached inside the pocket of her housekeeping uniform.
She pulled out an old folded photograph.
On the back was a handwritten sentence her mother had written twenty-eight years earlier.
Emily placed it on the table.
Margaret read the words.
Her knees nearly gave out.
May you like
Because the message said:
If anything happens to me, ask Margaret Mercer what happened to the necklace.
