Chapter 19 - Vanessa’s Final Deal

Emily opened the envelope with shaking hands.
Inside was a photograph dated ten years after Anna’s supposed death.
Anna stood outside a small coastal clinic.
Older.
Thinner.
Alive.
Emily could barely see through her tears.
“Where is she?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“I don’t know now.”
“You saw her.”
“Years ago.”
“Why didn’t she come back for me?”
Evelyn hesitated.
“Because Charles told her you would die if she did.”
Emily’s grief turned to rage.
Daniel stepped beside her.
Evelyn said Anna had survived the crash and gone into hiding.
For years, Charles believed she was dead.
Then Evelyn accidentally discovered her.
Instead of telling Charles, Evelyn helped Anna disappear again.
Emily wanted to hate her.
But for once, Evelyn might actually have protected someone.
Daniel asked where the clinic was.
Evelyn gave him the address.
Before they could continue, Daniel’s phone rang.
Vanessa.
He put it on speaker.
“I know Mother is there.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Vanessa continued.
“I have the original Mercer trust codicil.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
The codicil could determine every disputed voting right.
“Where did you get it?”
“Dad.”
Charles had stolen it from Robert years earlier.
Vanessa offered a trade.
The codicil for complete immunity.
Daniel almost laughed.
“You framed Emily, assaulted her, tampered with security, manipulated evidence, and helped conceal information about my father’s death.”
“I was twenty-three when Robert died.”
“You were thirty-five when you planted the necklace.”
Silence.
Vanessa changed tactics.
“If you want the codicil, come to the foundation gala tonight.”
The gala had been canceled publicly.
Apparently Vanessa knew it had been converted into a private board meeting.
Emily took the phone.
“I’ll come.”
Daniel looked at her.
Vanessa smiled through the speaker.
“Of course you will.”
That evening, Emily walked into the Mercer Foundation ballroom wearing a simple navy dress.
No housekeeping uniform.
No attempt to look like someone she wasn’t.
Daniel and detectives remained nearby.
Vanessa stood alone beside the stage.
She held an old document.
“The original codicil.”
Emily looked at it.
“What do you want?”
“A statement saying I never planted the necklace.”
Emily almost smiled.
“There’s video.”
“Then say it was a misunderstanding.”
“You slapped me.”
“I made a mistake.”
“No.”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“You think Daniel is your family now?”
Emily said nothing.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Families like this don’t accept people.”
“They absorb them.”
“They use them.”
“Then they decide which secrets you’re allowed to survive.”
Emily looked at the document.
“You learned that from your father.”
Vanessa’s composure cracked.
“My father taught me to survive.”
“No.”
Emily’s voice stayed calm.
“He taught you to become him.”
Vanessa tore the codicil in half.
Gasps erupted from the doorway.
Daniel stepped forward.
Vanessa smiled.
“You needed the original.”
Emily reached into her purse.
“No.”
She held up her phone.
“We needed you to admit you had it.”
Vanessa froze.
The entire conversation had been recorded.
Then Daniel’s attorney entered carrying a certified copy.
Robert had registered one copy with a private trust attorney decades earlier.
Vanessa had never known.
Police approached.
For the first time, Vanessa looked truly defeated.
But before they reached her, she turned to Emily.
“You still haven’t asked the most important question.”
Emily stared at her.
“What question?”
May you like
Vanessa smiled through tears.
“If Anna is alive, why has she been watching you this entire time?”
