Chapter 10 - The Trap Hidden Inside the Truth

By eight in the morning, Emily’s face was everywhere.
News sites called her the “Mercer Housekeeper Heiress.”
Anonymous sources claimed she had infiltrated the mansion.
A financial network reported that she was preparing a billion-dollar inheritance claim.
None of it was true.
Not yet.
But truth no longer mattered.
Charles Vale had built a story people wanted to believe.
A poor housekeeper had discovered a wealthy family connection and decided to seize a fortune.
Daniel’s attorneys demanded Emily remain silent.
Emily hated that advice.
Vanessa had slapped her.
Framed her.
Spied on her.
And now she was turning Emily into the criminal.
Daniel entered the breakfast room.
“The board meeting is at noon.”
“What happens?”
“Charles will ask the directors to suspend my voting authority until the inheritance issue is resolved.”
“Can he?”
“With enough votes.”
Emily looked at him.
“And does he have them?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
At eleven thirty, Daniel and Margaret left for Mercer headquarters.
Emily stayed behind with two investigators.
At eleven forty-two, someone rang the service entrance bell.
A courier delivered a small white box.
There was no return address.
Inside was Vanessa’s engagement ring.
Beneath it was a note.
Your mother made the same mistake.
She thought evidence was enough.
Emily immediately called Daniel.
No answer.
The board meeting had begun.
Then she noticed something beneath the ring.
A tiny memory card.
One investigator inserted it into a secure laptop.
A video opened.
The date was twelve years earlier.
Robert Mercer stood inside a parking garage.
Charles Vale stood opposite him.
Their argument had no audio.
But Robert was clearly furious.
Then a third person entered the frame.
Emily leaned closer.
Vanessa.
She was young.
Maybe twenty-three.
Robert pointed at her.
Vanessa started crying.
Charles pulled her behind him.
Then Robert handed Charles a document.
The video ended.
Another file remained.
An audio recording.
Vanessa’s younger voice filled the room.
“Dad, he knows I signed it.”
Charles answered.
“He knows nothing he can prove.”
“What if he tells Daniel?”
“He won’t.”
“How do you know?”
Charles paused.
Then he said four words.
“Because Robert leaves tonight.”
Emily’s blood went cold.
She called Daniel again.
Still no answer.
At Mercer headquarters, the board had already voted to temporarily freeze Daniel’s authority.
Charles Vale stood at the end of the conference table.
He smiled as the resolution passed.
Then Daniel’s assistant rushed through the door carrying a tablet.
“Mr. Mercer.”
Daniel looked up.
May you like
“You need to hear what Emily just found.”
Charles stopped smiling.
