Chapter 12 - The Money Margaret Buried

Margaret did not deny it.

She walked into the library and closed the door.

“The Mercer Children’s Foundation nearly collapsed in 1997.”

Emily folded her arms.

“Why?”

“Because Robert made a terrible investment.”

Daniel entered behind her.

Margaret looked at her son.

“You should hear this too.”

Twenty-nine years earlier, Robert had moved millions from a foundation reserve account into a private real-estate project.

He planned to return the money within weeks.

The deal failed.

The money disappeared.

If regulators discovered what he had done, Robert could have faced criminal charges.

Margaret panicked.

Charles Vale offered a solution.

He moved money through shell companies to replace the missing funds before the annual audit.

At first, Margaret believed Charles was saving the foundation.

Only later did she realize he had created a system he could exploit indefinitely.

“So Dad started it,” Daniel said.

Margaret nodded.

“He made the first illegal transfer.”

Emily felt the mystery rearrange itself.

Charles had not created the original secret.

He had inherited leverage.

And once he possessed that leverage, he used it to steal far more.

“Anna found the transfers,” Emily said.

“Yes.”

“She thought Charles took everything.”

“She didn’t know about Robert’s first transaction.”

Daniel looked furious.

“You protected Dad.”

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

“I protected this family.”

“No.”

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“You protected the name.”

Margaret didn’t argue.

Emily suddenly understood Vanessa’s warning.

Evidence alone had not been enough for Anna because exposing Charles would also expose Robert.

Margaret had every reason to prevent that.

Emily stepped closer.

“Did you ever ask Charles to silence my mother?”

Margaret stared at her.

“No.”

“Did you tell him where she was?”

“No.”

“Did you tell anyone?”

Margaret hesitated.

Emily’s heart sank.

“Who?”

“Robert.”

Daniel frowned.

“You said Dad found Anna himself.”

“I lied.”

The confession landed heavily.

Margaret admitted she finally told Robert where Anna was after years of guilt.

Robert immediately contacted her.

Within weeks, he learned Emily was his daughter.

He prepared the paternity test.

He also began gathering evidence against Charles.

Then he died.

Daniel whispered, “You led him back to her.”

“Yes.”

Emily looked at Margaret.

“And Charles followed him.”

Margaret shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

But Daniel suddenly remembered something.

His father’s driver had called in sick the night Robert died.

Daniel had always assumed it was coincidence.

He called the old personnel office.

Twenty minutes later, they found the driver’s name.

Patrick Nolan.

He had vanished after Robert’s funeral.

No tax records.

No employment history.

Nothing.

Except one recent address.

May you like

Patrick Nolan was alive.

And he lived less than fifteen miles from Vanessa.
