Chapter 17 - The Counterattack

Vanessa’s birth certificate listed Charles Vale and Evelyn Mercer as her parents.

The document had been sealed for decades.

Daniel sat silently after reading it.

Vanessa had grown up using her father’s surname.

Evelyn vanished from public life soon after her birth.

Charles raised Vanessa alone.

Margaret finally understood why Vanessa had always seemed obsessed with becoming part of the Mercer family.

“She already was.”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

“She was trying to get back inside.”

Daniel’s attorneys uncovered another fact.

Evelyn’s surrendered voting rights had never disappeared.

They had been placed in a dormant trust.

If Evelyn was alive, she might still have a legal claim.

If she died, Vanessa could inherit it.

That meant Vanessa had never needed Daniel’s marriage for money alone.

Marriage would have combined her potential voting rights with temporary control over Daniel’s.

She and Charles could have dominated Mercer Holdings.

The necklace frame had been designed to remove the only unexpected person capable of disrupting that plan.

Emily.

Daniel called an emergency press conference.

Against his attorneys’ advice, he did not attack Vanessa personally.

He released the authenticated security footage.

Owen’s messages.

The manipulated audio comparison.

And evidence showing Emily had never filed any financial claim.

Then Emily stepped to the microphone.

Cameras flashed.

She looked directly ahead.

“My mother was called a thief because someone put a necklace in her belongings.”

She paused.

“Twenty-nine years later, someone tried exactly the same thing with me.”

The room became silent.

“I’m not here to take a family fortune.”

“I’m here because lies become inheritance when nobody challenges them.”

The statement changed public opinion overnight.

Then Daniel made his move.

He asked the board to appoint an independent forensic committee.

Three directors who previously supported Charles joined him.

The investigation received full authority.

Charles lost access to company systems.

His accounts were frozen pending review.

Owen agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration from prosecutors.

For the first time, the case broke open.

Owen admitted Charles paid him for years.

He admitted stealing Robert’s letter.

He admitted helping Vanessa disable cameras.

Then came the question everyone feared.

“Were you involved in Robert Mercer’s death?”

Owen said no.

“Who was?”

Owen looked at the detectives.

“Evelyn.”

Emily felt cold.

Owen claimed Evelyn had been in the black SUV.

She confronted Robert on the mountain road.

Charles paid her that night.

But Owen insisted Robert’s death was not planned.

“What happened?”

Owen swallowed.

“They argued.”

“Then?”

“Robert drove away.”

“Did Evelyn follow?”

“Yes.”

“What happened after that?”

Owen stared at the table.

“I heard Charles say the problem had solved itself.”

Daniel’s investigator rushed into the room before anyone could ask another question.

“We found Evelyn.”

Daniel stood.

“Where?”

The investigator looked at Emily.

“At the Mercer mansion.”

Everyone froze.

“She entered through the east service gate twelve minutes ago.”
