Chapter 11 - The Vote That Changed Sides

Daniel played the recording for the board.

Nobody spoke when it ended.

Charles leaned back in his chair.

“A manipulated file.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You recognized it quickly.”

Charles shrugged.

“Because this entire circus has been manufactured.”

Daniel turned toward the directors.

“Then you won’t object to forensic authentication.”

Charles’s attorney immediately interrupted.

The board meeting became chaos.

Three directors who had supported Charles asked to reconsider their votes.

Two refused.

One left the room.

Daniel did not regain full authority.

But Charles failed to gain control.

For the first time, the balance had shifted.

Emily thought that should feel like victory.

It didn’t.

Because the recording suggested Robert’s death had been planned.

And Vanessa had known something.

That afternoon, police brought Vanessa in for questioning.

She was released hours later.

No arrest.

Not enough direct evidence.

She called Emily before sunset.

Emily almost ignored it.

Then she answered.

Vanessa’s voice sounded different.

Tired.

“You think you won.”

Emily stood beside the library window.

“I think you’re scared.”

Vanessa laughed quietly.

“I’ve been scared since I was fifteen.”

Emily said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

“My father told me your mother wanted to destroy our family.”

“Your father lied.”

“Maybe.”

“Why did you frame me?”

Silence.

Then Vanessa gave the first truthful answer Emily had ever heard from her.

“Because I recognized you.”

“From what?”

“A photograph my father kept locked in his desk.”

Emily’s throat tightened.

“What photograph?”

“You and Anna.”

Vanessa explained that Charles had tracked Anna for years.

After Robert died, he believed Anna still possessed copies of the financial records.

When Emily began working at the Mercer mansion, Vanessa saw her name on a staff report.

She searched Emily’s background.

She found Anna.

Then she panicked.

“The necklace was supposed to get you fired.”

“You assaulted me.”

“I needed everyone to believe I hated you because you were a thief.”

“You did hate me.”

“No.”

Vanessa’s voice softened.

“I hated what you meant.”

Emily looked out at the darkening grounds.

“What did I mean?”

“That everything my father built could collapse.”

Emily almost ended the call.

Then Vanessa whispered, “And so could everything Margaret protected.”

Emily froze.

“What does Margaret have to do with your father’s crimes?”

Vanessa breathed into the phone.

“You still think Charles was stealing from the Mercer family.”

“He was.”

“Yes.”

“But that wasn’t where the money started.”

Emily gripped the phone.

“Then where?”

Vanessa answered.

“Ask Margaret what happened to the children’s foundation money in 1997.”

The call ended.

Behind Emily, a floorboard creaked.

She turned.

May you like

Margaret was standing in the doorway.

And from the look on her face, she had heard everything.
