Chapter 9 - THE CRASH THAT WASN'T FORGOTTEN

Federal investigators reopened questions surrounding Daniel Caldwell’s plane crash.

The aircraft had gone down during severe weather.

No criminal evidence had ever been established.

But Daniel’s recording created suspicion.

Victor denied making a threat.

His attorney called the recording “family frustration taken out of context.”

Then investigators found maintenance payments.

Two weeks before the crash, a shell company connected to Gregory Marlowe paid the aircraft maintenance contractor.

The amount was unusual.

Fifty thousand dollars.

Cash equivalent.

Gregory claimed it was unrelated consulting.

No one believed the timing.

Vanessa’s father was now connected to an old death.

Vanessa herself began cooperating more seriously.

She requested another interview.

Emily attended with her attorney.

Vanessa looked different without designer clothes and perfect makeup.

Smaller.

Tired.

“I didn’t know about Daniel’s crash.”

Emily did not respond.

Vanessa continued.

“My father told me Victor needed the merger.”

“He said Caldwell Industries was trying to destroy our family.”

“So you planted the necklace?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“You saw me every day.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me work.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I supported my younger sister.”

Vanessa looked down.

“You still tried to have me arrested.”

“I know.”

Emily’s voice remained calm.

“Do you?”

Vanessa began crying.

“I thought if you were fired, everything would end.”

“You thought wrong.”

“Yes.”

“What was Victor going to give you?”

“Adrian.”

Emily glanced toward Adrian.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Not like that.”

“He promised Adrian would marry me after the merger.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“He promised something he didn’t own.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“I thought you loved me.”

“I did.”

“Then why didn’t you propose?”

“Because every time I asked about your father’s business, you lied.”

Vanessa looked away.

The engagement everyone assumed existed had never actually been formalized.

Vanessa had told guests she and Adrian were “practically engaged.”

Victor had encouraged the rumor.

Another manipulation.

Then Vanessa gave investigators something important.

A second phone.

Victor had used it to contact her secretly.

Messages remained.

One read:

CARTER MUST BE OUT BEFORE REVIEW.

Another:

USE THE NECKLACE.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

“I didn’t know he kept them.”

Detective Bennett almost smiled.

“People who think everyone else is disposable usually keep evidence.”

But there was one message that none of them understood.

IF PLAN A FAILS, HARRIS CLEANS THE SERVER.

Adrian looked toward Bennett.

“Harris?”

Robert Hayes.

Head of Caldwell security.

The same man who had found the necklace inside Emily’s bag.

The same man who claimed the CCTV system had “accidentally” begun displaying old footage.

Emily felt cold.

The video that saved her had not appeared by accident.
