Chapter 10 - THE MAN WHO CONTROLLED THE CAMERAS

Robert Hayes disappeared before police reached his home.

His access card was disabled.

His bank accounts were flagged.

But he had already withdrawn sixty thousand dollars in cash.

Caldwell investigators reviewed the night of the gala again.

Robert had been the first security officer to search Emily’s bag.

Vanessa had whispered to him minutes before the necklace was “discovered.”

Robert had also attempted to shut down camera playback.

He failed because someone else had remotely overridden the system.

Who?

The answer surprised everyone.

Maria Alvarez.

The mansion’s sixty-four-year-old head housekeeper.

Maria had worked for the Caldwells for thirty-six years.

She had trained Emily.

She had watched the gala from the service office.

When security accused Emily, Maria checked the camera feed herself.

She saw Vanessa planting the necklace.

Then she discovered Robert trying to erase the file.

So Maria sent it directly to the ballroom television.

Adrian looked stunned.

“You know how to access the security system?”

Maria shrugged.

“Your father taught me.”

Adrian smiled for the first time in days.

Of course Daniel had.

He had trusted the woman who knew every door in the house.

Maria turned to Emily.

“I knew you didn’t steal it.”

Emily’s eyes filled.

“Why?”

“Because when you found Mrs. Caldwell’s diamond bracelet under her bed last year, you put it on my desk before anyone knew it was missing.”

Emily had forgotten.

Maria had not.

Then Maria revealed more.

Robert had been taking cash from Victor for years.

He changed camera retention settings.

Removed visitor records.

Granted after-hours access.

And three months earlier, Maria had caught him inside Emily’s staff locker.

That was when she began saving security footage independently.

“You knew someone was targeting me?”

“I suspected.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I told Martin.”

Emily sighed.

Another person trying to protect her through secrecy.

Maria looked ashamed.

“I thought we needed proof.”

“You did.”

“But next time, tell me.”

Maria nodded.

“Fair.”

The cloud archive Maria created contained six months of footage.

One clip showed Victor meeting Robert at midnight.

Another showed Gregory Marlowe entering through the service garage.

A third showed Beatrice secretly copying papers from Victor’s briefcase.

Then one recording changed the case.

Victor and Robert stood outside Adrian’s private study.

Robert asked.

“What if Carter refuses to leave after the necklace?”

Victor answered.

“Then we make it look like she came back for revenge.”

“How?”

Victor smiled.

“Fire.”

Emily’s stomach tightened.

Adrian paused the footage.

“When was this?”

Two days before the gala.

Detective Bennett immediately ordered police protection around the mansion.

That night, at 3:12 a.m., an alarm activated inside the Caldwell archive building.

Smoke poured from the second floor.

Someone had already begun Victor’s backup plan.
