Chapter 13 - THE FRIEND WHO SOLD THEM OUT

Nathan Cole entered the emergency board meeting beside Victor.

Adrian stared at him through the glass doors.

“You sold us out.”

Nathan’s face showed no emotion.

“This is business.”

“We’ve been friends for twenty years.”

“That’s exactly why I know you’re not capable of doing what needs to be done.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Which is?”

“Saving the company.”

Victor smiled.

“The Marlowe merger proceeds tonight.”

Emily held up the trust document.

“No.”

Victor’s smile faded.

Martin placed certified copies on the table.

“Founder Protection Provision.”

Victor read it.

His face hardened.

Then Nathan laughed.

“You think we didn’t know about that?”

Emily’s stomach tightened.

Nathan opened another document.

A waiver.

Signed by Rose Carter.

Thirty years earlier.

It appeared to permanently surrender Rose’s veto rights.

Martin stared.

“I’ve never seen this.”

Nathan pushed it forward.

“Not my problem.”

Emily looked at the signature.

ROSE CARTER.

Her mother.

If genuine, everything changed.

Victor leaned back.

“The maid can keep the shares.”

“She simply cannot stop the merger.”

Emily did not react.

That bothered Victor.

“You’re very quiet.”

“My mother hated blue ink.”

Nathan frowned.

“What?”

“She wrote everything in black.”

“She signed birthday cards in black.”

“Checks in black.”

“Medical forms in black.”

The waiver signature was blue.

Nathan smiled.

“That proves nothing.”

“No.”

“But this might.”

Emily removed her mother’s letter.

Rose wrote that Charles created something for Emily.

She never mentioned surrendering rights.

Martin requested forensic examination.

Victor refused to delay the vote.

The board began anyway.

Three votes for merger.

Two against.

Nathan voted yes.

Adrian voted no.

Victor reached majority.

Then the conference room door opened.

Beatrice Caldwell entered.

Victor stood.

“What are you doing here?”

She carried a folder.

“Something I should have done thirty years ago.”

She handed Martin another document.

A letter written by Victor.

To Beatrice.

Dated the same week as Rose’s supposed waiver.

I need Rose’s signature transferred before Charles notices.

Emily stared at Victor.

Beatrice continued.

“I found it in your private files years ago.”

“You kept it.”

Victor’s face turned red.

“You stupid woman.”

The room froze.

Beatrice did not.

“For thirty-two years, you taught me to be afraid of that voice.”

“Not anymore.”

Martin looked at the letter.

It strongly suggested the waiver was forged.

The board counsel immediately suspended the vote pending authentication.

Victor slammed his fist down.

Nathan stood.

“You promised this was clean.”

Victor turned on him.

“Sit down.”

Nathan stared.

There it was.

The alliance cracking.

Then police entered.

Not for Victor.

For Nathan.

Detective Bennett held a warrant.

Nathan Cole had transferred four million dollars from Caldwell accounts into an offshore company connected to Robert Hayes.

Adrian looked at his oldest friend.

Nathan’s face collapsed.

Victor walked away from the table.

For a moment, it appeared the merger had been stopped.

Then Nathan shouted as officers handcuffed him.

“You still don’t understand.”

Adrian turned.

May you like

Nathan looked directly at Emily.

“Victor isn’t the one who started this.”
