Chapter 18 - VANESSA'S CHOICE

Vanessa requested to see Emily.

Again.

Emily almost refused.

Then Vanessa sent one sentence.

I KNOW WHERE MY FATHER KEPT THE BACKUP.

They met with investigators present.

Vanessa looked terrified.

“My father recorded everything.”

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

“Against Victor?”

“Against everyone.”

Gregory kept cloud backups under an account disguised as a photography archive.

Vanessa knew the password because it used her childhood nickname.

The archive contained thousands of files.

Business meetings.

Phone calls.

Private conversations.

One audio file was dated the morning of Daniel Caldwell’s crash.

Victor’s voice.

Then the pilot.

“The weather is getting worse.”

Victor answered.

“Daniel has to leave today.”

“The aircraft needs another inspection.”

“You were told it was cleared.”

“The mechanic disagrees.”

Victor became angry.

“If Daniel misses that meeting, hundreds of millions disappear.”

“Get him in the air.”

Adrian stopped the recording.

His face went white.

Victor had not necessarily ordered sabotage.

But he had pressured the pilot to fly despite maintenance concerns.

His obsession with the deal had helped create the conditions that killed his brother.

Then another recording played.

Gregory confronting Victor days later.

“You killed him.”

Victor answered.

“No.”

“I pushed him.”

“There’s a difference.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

For twelve years, Victor had carried that distinction as if it absolved him.

It did not.

The archive also revealed where Gregory was.

He had entered federal protective custody after realizing Victor still had allies outside jail.

The abandoned car had been staged by investigators.

Vanessa had not known.

For once, the disappearance was protection rather than another crime.

With Gregory’s testimony and recordings, prosecutors strengthened the case.

Vanessa received a cooperation agreement.

She still faced consequences for framing Emily.

Before leaving, she looked at her.

“I don’t expect forgiveness.”

“Good.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I deserve that.”

Emily studied her.

“Why did you finally help?”

Vanessa looked toward the window.

“Because every man involved kept telling me I was special while treating me like a tool.”

“My father.”

“Victor.”

“Even Nathan sometimes.”

“I became cruel because I thought being chosen meant I had won.”

Emily said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

“Then I watched you lose everything in that ballroom.”

“Your job.”

“Your reputation.”

“Everyone’s trust.”

“And you still told the truth.”

“I had more expensive clothes than you.”

“More access.”

“More protection.”

“But you were freer than I was.”

Emily finally spoke.

“Freedom doesn’t erase what you did.”

“I know.”

“But telling the truth now matters.”

Vanessa nodded.

That was all Emily gave her.

Not friendship.

Not absolution.

A door toward accountability.

Sometimes that was enough.
