Chapter 1 - THE VIDEO THAT STOPPED THE ROOM

The security guards were already walking toward Emily Carter when the giant television above the fireplace suddenly flickered.

Emily stood frozen beside the marble staircase.

Her housekeeping uniform was wrinkled from the frantic search.

Her eyes were red.

The diamond necklace rested inside a clear evidence bag on the security table.

Five minutes earlier, everyone in the Caldwell mansion had watched security chief Robert Hayes pull that necklace from Emily’s handbag.

Vanessa Marlowe had been the first person to gasp.

“I knew it.”

Those three words had destroyed Emily before she could defend herself.

Guests whispered.

Employees looked away.

Even Adrian Caldwell, owner of the mansion and heir to Caldwell Industries, had stared at Emily with stunned disappointment.

“Emily.”

His voice had been quiet.

“Tell me this isn’t what it looks like.”

“It isn’t.”

That was all she had managed to say.

Then security moved toward her.

But now the television came alive.

A hallway appeared.

Timestamp.

8:43 p.m.

Emily’s handbag sat unattended on a chair outside the service pantry.

Then Vanessa walked into view.

The room became silent.

On the screen, Vanessa glanced over her shoulder.

She opened Emily’s handbag.

And dropped the diamond necklace inside.

Someone screamed.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Emily covered her mouth.

Adrian slowly turned toward his fiancée.

“What did you do?”

Vanessa’s face drained of color.

“That recording is fake.”

Nobody answered.

The video continued.

Vanessa did not leave immediately.

She waited.

Thirty seconds later, another figure entered the hallway.

A tall man wearing a charcoal overcoat.

His face was partially hidden by the camera angle.

He handed Vanessa a thick cream-colored envelope.

She opened it.

Looked inside.

Then whispered something.

The microphone barely caught the words.

“She doesn’t know?”

The man answered.

“Not yet.”

Vanessa looked toward the pantry where Emily had been working.

“And Adrian?”

“He can never know what she really is.”

The recording ended.

No one moved.

Adrian stared at Vanessa.

“What Emily really is?”

Vanessa suddenly grabbed her purse.

“I’m leaving.”

Adrian stepped between her and the door.

“No.”

Her eyes widened.

“You cannot keep me here.”

“I can keep everyone here until police arrive.”

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“Over a necklace?”

Adrian pointed toward the dark television.

“This stopped being about a necklace thirty seconds ago.”

Emily finally found her voice.

“Mr. Caldwell.”

Adrian turned.

“There’s something you should know.”

Emily reached beneath the collar of her uniform.

She pulled out an old silver pendant.

Vanessa stared at it.

The fear on her face deepened.

Emily noticed.

So did Adrian.

“My mother gave me this before she died.”

Emily opened the pendant.

Inside was a tiny photograph of a woman standing beside an older man.

Adrian walked closer.

Then froze.

The older man in the photograph was his grandfather.

Charles Caldwell.

Founder of Caldwell Industries.

Dead for eighteen years.

Adrian looked from the photograph to Emily.

“Why is my grandfather standing beside your mother?”

Emily swallowed.

“I was hoping someone in this house could tell me.”

Across the room, Vanessa stopped trying to leave.

Because for the first time that night, Emily understood something.

Vanessa had not planted the diamond necklace because she believed a maid was easy to blame.

May you like

She had planted it because Emily had brought something into the mansion that terrified her.

And the mysterious man in the hallway already knew exactly what it was.
