Chapter 4 - WHY VANESSA NEEDED EMILY GONE

Vanessa finally agreed to speak.

Not because she wanted to.

Because her attorney had seen the CCTV footage.

The necklace belonged to Adrian’s grandmother, Evelyn Caldwell.

Its value exceeded two million dollars.

Planting it created serious criminal exposure.

Detective Bennett placed a photograph of Martin Shaw on the table.

Vanessa looked away.

“You know him.”

“Everyone knows Martin.”

“You met him in the hallway.”

“No.”

Bennett played the recording.

Vanessa’s attorney closed his eyes.

“She doesn’t know?”

“Not yet.”

“And Adrian?”

“He can never know what she really is.”

Detective Bennett stopped the video.

“What was inside the envelope?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Bennett leaned forward.

“Martin is disappearing.”

“You are sitting here on camera planting stolen property.”

“When people like Martin disappear, they usually leave someone else holding the consequences.”

Vanessa’s composure cracked.

“It was a DNA report.”

Emily felt the room tighten.

“Whose?”

Vanessa looked at her.

“Yours.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“How did you get Emily’s DNA?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“She cut her hand in the kitchen three months ago.”

Emily remembered.

A broken wineglass.

Vanessa had insisted on helping.

She had handed Emily a tissue.

Emily stared at her.

“You kept it.”

Vanessa’s eyes lowered.

“Martin told me to.”

“Why?”

“Because he had found Charles Caldwell’s old trust documents.”

The truth began forming.

Martin discovered that Charles had created a hidden trust for Rose Carter’s descendants.

He needed proof Emily was Rose’s daughter.

The DNA test confirmed it.

Then Vanessa learned.

“What did Martin promise you?”

Adrian asked.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“A future.”

“What does that mean?”

“He said if you married me before the next annual trust review, my family’s shares would combine with yours.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

Vanessa’s father, Gregory Marlowe, owned a large supplier negotiating a merger with Caldwell Industries.

“And Emily?”

Vanessa answered quietly.

“If Emily formally claimed the trust, the merger would fail.”

“Why?”

“Because Charles’s trust gives her veto rights over any transaction diluting family voting control.”

Emily stared.

She had never wanted shares.

Yet people had almost destroyed her life because of rights she did not know existed.

Adrian asked.

“So you framed her.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Martin said we only needed her fired.”

“You planted a two-million-dollar necklace.”

“I panicked.”

“No.”

Adrian’s voice went cold.

“You calculated.”

Vanessa finally looked at Emily.

“I didn’t think you would go to prison.”

Emily almost laughed.

“What exactly did you think happens when a maid is caught with a two-million-dollar necklace?”

Vanessa had no answer.

Then Bennett asked.

“Where is Martin?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

“Who else was involved?”

Another hesitation.

“My father.”

Adrian froze.

“Gregory?”

Vanessa nodded.

“But Martin kept saying the plan came from someone inside the Caldwell family.”

The room fell silent.

Emily looked at Adrian.

Their problem had just become larger.
