Chapter 8 - THE DEAD MAN'S SAFE

Emily thought she had misheard.

“Who?”

Beatrice refused to answer by phone.

She arranged a meeting at a church outside Boston.

Adrian insisted on coming.

Beatrice looked exhausted when they arrived.

For thirty-two years, she had been Victor Caldwell’s wife.

Now she carried a small suitcase and kept looking toward the door.

“He has controlled everything since we married.”

She said.

“Money.”

“Friends.”

“Where I go.”

“Who I speak to.”

Adrian’s anger rose.

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

“Because your uncle built his life around making sure people believed him first.”

Emily understood that sentence too well.

Beatrice opened her handbag.

She removed a key.

“Victor believes this safe belongs to Daniel.”

Adrian froze.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“Dad died.”

“The safe didn’t.”

Beatrice explained that Adrian’s father Daniel Caldwell had discovered Victor’s financial manipulation years before his fatal plane crash.

He had created a private safe deposit box.

Only Daniel, Martin Shaw, and Beatrice knew.

“Why you?”

“Daniel knew Victor underestimated me.”

“Where is the box?”

“New York.”

The three numbers hidden inside Emily’s pendant suddenly returned to her mind.

214.

215.

216.

Martin investigated.

Vault 214.

Box 17.

Access code ending 9031.

The pendant had contained directions all along.

Charles must have given Rose the key information decades earlier.

The next morning, Emily and Adrian opened the box under police supervision.

Inside was the missing envelope.

Beatrice had placed it there after taking it from Vanessa’s hotel.

But there was far more.

Original DNA results.

Charles’s trust.

Private loan records tied to Victor.

Audio recordings.

And a letter from Daniel Caldwell.

Adrian’s father.

Adrian opened it with shaking hands.

If this box is opened because Victor is challenging the Carter trust, then I failed to stop him.

The trust is legitimate.

Grandfather told me Rose was his daughter.

I met her once.

She wanted nothing from us except the truth.

Victor believed that made her dangerous.

Emily covered her mouth.

Daniel continued.

Victor has begun moving money through Marlowe-controlled entities.

If he succeeds, he will eventually force a merger.

Do not let him.

Adrian sat down.

The letter had been written thirteen years earlier.

One year before Daniel’s plane crash.

Emily whispered.

“Did your father think Victor would kill him?”

Adrian looked toward the audio tapes.

They played the final recording.

Daniel’s voice.

Then Victor’s.

“You’re going to ruin everything.”

Daniel answered.

“No.”

“I’m going to stop you from selling what isn’t yours.”

Victor’s voice hardened.

“Then don’t get on the plane tomorrow.”

The recording ended.

Adrian stared at the machine.

His father’s death had been ruled an accident.

Now it sounded like a warning.

May you like

Maybe even a threat.

The conspiracy around Emily’s necklace had just reached back thirteen years.
