Chapter 2 - THE MAN WITH THE ENVELOPE

Police arrived twenty minutes later.
The gala ended immediately.
Guests were escorted from the mansion.
Vanessa refused to answer questions without an attorney.
Adrian remained in the security room with Emily and Detective Laura Bennett.
Security technicians replayed the hallway video frame by frame.
The strangerâs face remained partly hidden.
Then one technician paused the footage.
A silver cuff link reflected light beneath the manâs coat sleeve.
Adrian leaned forward.
âZoom in.â
The technician enlarged it.
A black shield surrounded by three silver lines.
Adrian knew the symbol.
âSo do I.â
Detective Bennett looked at him.
âWho?â
âMartin Shaw.â
Emily had heard the name.
Everyone who worked at Caldwell Industries had.
Martin Shaw had served as the Caldwell familyâs private attorney for twenty-seven years.
He managed trusts.
Estates.
Board agreements.
Property records.
Even Charles Caldwellâs will.
Detective Bennett asked the obvious question.
âWhere is he tonight?â
Adrian checked his phone.
âHe was invited.â
âBut he never arrived.â
Emily looked toward the screen.
âHe was here.â
Adrian nodded.
âJust not where anyone was supposed to see him.â
Police searched the mansion.
The envelope Vanessa received was gone.
So was Martin Shaw.
Vanessa sat in another room with her attorney.
She claimed the man in the footage was impossible to identify.
She claimed the necklace incident was a misunderstanding.
She even claimed she had moved the necklace because she believed Emily had already stolen it.
No one believed her.
But proving why she framed Emily was harder.
Then Detective Bennett asked Emily about the pendant.
Emily removed it carefully.
âMy motherâs name was Rose Carter.â
âWhat did she do?â
âShe worked as a home-care nurse.â
âFor Charles Caldwell?â
Emily shook her head.
âI donât know.â
âMy mother never talked about him.â
âThen why do you have the photograph?â
âShe gave me the pendant three days before she died.â
âWhen?â
âTwo years ago.â
âWhat did she say?â
Emily remembered the hospital room.
Her mother had been weak.
Barely able to speak.
Yet she had pressed the pendant into Emilyâs palm.
âShe said if I ever worked for the Caldwells, I shouldnât let anyone take it.â
Adrian looked confused.
âYour mother knew you would work here?â
âNo.â
âI didnât apply until last year.â
Detective Bennett opened the pendant.
Behind the photograph was a piece of folded paper Emily had never removed.
She frowned.
âI didnât know that was there.â
Using tweezers, Bennett pulled it out.
Three handwritten numbers appeared.
214.
215.
216.
Adrian stared.
Emily asked, âWhat does that mean?â
âI donât know.â
Then Adrianâs phone rang.
His chief financial officer, Nathan Cole.
Adrian answered.
âWhat happened?â
Nathan spoke quickly.
Adrianâs expression changed.
âSay that again.â
He listened.
Then slowly looked at Emily.
âWhat?â
She asked.
Adrian ended the call.
âSomeone accessed the Caldwell family trust server fifteen minutes ago.â
Detective Bennett straightened.
âWho?â
âMartin Shaw.â
âWhat did he open?â
Adrianâs voice became quiet.
âA file created by my grandfather.â
Emily felt cold.
âWhat file?â
May you like
Adrian looked directly at her.
âCARTER.â
