Chapter 9: The DNA Secret

The helicopter disappeared into the gray morning sky.

Dr. Leonard Pierce watched it until it became a tiny black dot above the clouds.

He had expected answers.

Instead, Vivian Hale had given him another mystery.

You'll understand when the child is born.

The words unsettled him.

He looked down at the silver briefcase that now contained only a few empty folders.

She had taken everything else.

Every ultrasound.

Every lab report.

Every DNA analysis.

For the first time since agreeing to Victor Hale's offer nearly three years earlier, Dr. Pierce wondered if he had made the worst mistake of his life.

Evergreen Memorial Cemetery

Marcus slipped the photograph back into the music box.

His mind raced.

Judge Harrison Bennett.

Victor Hale.

His father.

The mysterious third man.

They had all known each other decades before.

Daniel carefully closed the hidden compartment beneath Eleanor's headstone.

"I'll have this area secured."

Marcus nodded absently.

"What are you thinking?"

"My father never mentioned Judge Bennett."

Daniel frowned.

"Maybe he had a reason."

Marcus looked toward the horizon.

"My father trusted very few people."

"If Bennett was standing beside him..."

"...he mattered."

Daniel glanced at the photograph again.

"Then we need to find out why."

St. Augustine Medical Center

Khloe had finally managed to sit upright without assistance.

The pain was still there.

But every hour she felt a little stronger.

Captain Sarah Bennett stood by the window speaking quietly into her phone.

"I want every airport, train station, and border crossing alerted."

She listened for several seconds.

"No."

"I don't care how respected he is."

"Dr. Pierce is now a fugitive."

She ended the call.

Khloe looked at her.

"Did he really help them?"

Sarah hesitated.

"We don't know how much."

Khloe lowered her eyes.

"He always seemed kind."

Sarah walked closer.

"Sometimes the people who betray us work the hardest to earn our trust first."

Hale Estate

Victor Hale entered his private library.

Vivian was already waiting.

She placed the silver briefcase on the desk.

"He delivered everything."

Victor opened it.

Medical reports.

Blood work.

Genetic screening.

He carefully removed a sealed envelope marked:

CONFIDENTIAL DNA ANALYSIS

Victor smiled.

"So..."

"The final piece."

Vivian folded her arms.

"You still haven't told me."

Victor opened the envelope.

His eyes scanned the report.

For the first time in years...

His smile disappeared.

Vivian noticed immediately.

"What?"

Victor read the report again.

Then again.

"No..."

He whispered.

"That can't be right."

Vivian stepped closer.

"Father?"

Victor slowly handed her the report.

She read only the highlighted conclusion.

Then looked up in disbelief.

"Impossible."

Victor nodded.

"Unless..."

He stared into space.

"...we've been fighting the wrong family all along."

FBI Headquarters – New York

Special Agent Rebecca Lawson entered a conference room carrying a thick case file.

Daniel Carter and Marcus were already waiting.

Rebecca placed several photographs on the table.

"You asked about Judge Harrison Bennett."

Marcus leaned forward.

Rebecca spread out old newspaper clippings.

"Thirty-five years ago, four men founded a real estate investment partnership."

Marcus recognized the faces immediately.

His father.

Victor Hale.

Judge Bennett.

The unknown fourth man.

Rebecca pointed at the final photograph.

"His name was Samuel Whitmore."

Marcus frowned.

"I've never heard of him."

Rebecca nodded.

"Most people haven't."

"He disappeared thirty years ago."

Daniel looked up.

"Disappeared?"

"No body."

"No arrest."

"No death certificate."

Marcus looked at the old photograph again.

"What happened?"

Rebecca sighed.

"Officially?"

"The partnership dissolved after allegations of financial fraud."

"And unofficially?"

Rebecca met his eyes.

"Someone stole nearly two hundred million dollars."

Marcus frowned.

"Who?"

Rebecca shook her head.

"No one ever proved it."

Mercy General Hospital

Adrian Cole slowly regained consciousness once more.

This time, detectives were ready.

A recording device sat on the bedside table.

The lead investigator leaned forward.

"Mr. Cole."

Adrian opened his eyes weakly.

"I..."

"We only need one thing."

Adrian swallowed painfully.

"The truth."

Silence.

Then...

"I never wanted anyone hurt."

The detective nodded.

"Who planned the attack?"

Adrian closed his eyes.

"Victor..."

The detective waited.

"...didn't."

The room became completely still.

"What?"

Adrian struggled to breathe.

"It wasn't Victor."

The detective frowned.

"Then who?"

Adrian whispered,

"It was..."

Before he could finish—

The heart monitor emitted one long, continuous tone.

Doctors rushed inside.

"Code Blue!"

The detective stepped back.

Nurses began CPR.

Another doctor prepared the defibrillator.

"Clear!"

Adrian's body jerked violently.

Nothing.

Again.

"Clear!"

Still nothing.

After twelve desperate minutes...

The attending physician removed his gloves.

"Time of death..."

The detective quietly switched off the recorder.

Adrian Cole had taken the answer with him.

Later That Evening

Marcus returned to Khloe's hospital room.

She smiled faintly.

"You look exhausted."

"I am."

He kissed her forehead.

"How's our little fighter?"

Khloe rested her hand on her stomach.

"He kicked me three times today."

Marcus laughed softly.

"Already stubborn."

"Just like his father."

For a few precious moments...

The world outside disappeared.

No conspiracies.

No betrayals.

Only the quiet promise of a family refusing to break.

Then Marcus noticed something on her bedside table.

An envelope.

He frowned.

"What's this?"

Khloe looked surprised.

"I thought you left it."

Marcus slowly picked it up.

No postage.

No return address.

Only three handwritten words.

Open Together.

Daniel entered the room at that exact moment.

"I didn't see anyone deliver that."

Marcus carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

A newborn baby wrapped in a blue blanket.

Across the bottom someone had written:

He isn't the first Thorne heir.

Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.

Behind the photograph was another note.

Only one sentence.

Ask your father what happened in 1991.

Marcus stared silently at the date.

His father had died five years earlier.

Which meant someone was referring to a secret he had taken to the grave.

Or...

Someone else was still alive who knew exactly what had happened.
