Chapter 1: The Kick

The kick came so suddenly that, for one impossible heartbeat, everyone in the private hospital suite believed they had imagined it.

Khloe Thorne staggered backward, her hands instinctively wrapping around the curve of her seven-month pregnant belly before the rest of her body even understood what had happened.

Pain erupted through her lower back as the sharp corner of a marble console table slammed into her spine.

The impact stole the air from her lungs.

She couldn't breathe.

Couldn't think.

Couldn't even scream.

A crystal champagne flute trembled on the polished surface before tipping over the edge.

It struck the marble floor.

The sound exploded through the luxurious suite.

Glass shattered into hundreds of glittering fragments.

Across the room, Isabella Rossi remained perfectly still.

She looked breathtaking in her crimson silk gown, every strand of her dark hair carefully arranged, every diamond catching the warm glow from the chandelier above.

She didn't look like a woman who had just assaulted a pregnant wife.

She looked like someone attending another charity gala.

Her lips curved into the faintest smile.

"You should have listened," she said softly.

Khloe forced herself upright, one trembling hand gripping the edge of the marble table while the other protected the tiny life growing inside her.

"Leave."

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"I said... leave."

Instead, Isabella stepped closer.

There was no hesitation.

No guilt.

Only contempt.

"For three years," Isabella murmured, "I've watched you pretend you deserved everything."

She tilted her head.

"The mansion."

"The family name."

"Marcus."

"And now his heir."

Khloe's breathing became shallow.

"This isn't about Marcus."

"Oh, but it always has been."

The smile disappeared.

"You were never supposed to stay."

Before Khloe could react, Isabella lunged.

Both hands slammed violently against Khloe's chest.

The force threw her backward once again.

Her shoulders struck the marble table harder than before.

A burst of agony shot through her ribs.

Her knees buckled.

She collapsed onto the polished floor.

Another wave of pain ripped through her abdomen.

This one was different.

Deep.

Terrifying.

Maternal instinct overwhelmed everything else.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Only one desperate thought.

Please...

Please be okay.

She curled around her stomach as another sharp cramp tightened across her belly.

Then came the footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Deliberate.

Khloe looked up.

Isabella stood directly above her.

"You know what your problem is?" Isabella asked quietly.

"You actually believed he loved you more than power."

Khloe's eyes widened.

"What are you talking about?"

"I gave Marcus a choice once."

Silence.

"He chose the company."

Another pause.

"He chose you because you looked perfect beside him."

She leaned closer.

"But he'll never forgive a wife who loses his child."

Khloe felt cold.

Ice cold.

Before she could answer—

The stiletto heel crashed into her side.

The force sent white-hot pain exploding through her entire body.

She cried out.

Not because of the kick.

Because something inside her shifted.

Something that should never have shifted.

Her breathing became ragged.

Warm liquid spread beneath her.

She didn't dare look.

She already knew.

"No..."

Her voice cracked.

"No... please..."

Isabella stared down without emotion.

"It wasn't supposed to be this dramatic."

She adjusted the sleeve of her gown.

"But accidents happen."

Then—

The suite door burst open.

Marcus Thorne froze in the doorway.

Still wearing the tailored black tuxedo from the charity gala downstairs, he looked every inch the billionaire the media adored.

Powerful.

Controlled.

Untouchable.

Until now.

His eyes found Khloe.

She lay curled on the marble floor.

White silk maternity dress stained.

Hair disheveled.

One hand clutching her stomach.

The other reaching toward him.

Behind Marcus stood Elaine Parker, the event coordinator.

Her clipboard slipped from her fingers.

Neither of them spoke.

Neither of them moved.

The silence inside the suite became suffocating.

Marcus slowly looked around.

Broken crystal.

Overturned chair.

Blood.

Not much.

But enough.

Then his eyes settled on Isabella.

She understood immediately.

In less than a second, everything about her changed.

Her breathing became uneven.

Tears flooded her eyes.

Her shoulders began trembling.

She stumbled backward as though terrified.

"Marcus..."

Her voice shook perfectly.

"I—I didn't mean..."

He stared.

She covered her mouth.

"Khloe attacked me."

Marcus didn't respond.

Isabella pointed toward the shattered glass.

"She became hysterical."

Another tear slid down her cheek.

"I tried to calm her."

"She slipped."

"I swear I never—"

"Stop."

Marcus's voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

The room fell silent again.

He crossed the room without looking at Isabella.

He dropped to his knees beside Khloe.

His expensive tuxedo brushed against broken glass.

He didn't care.

His shaking hands gently cupped Khloe's face.

"Look at me."

Her eyes fluttered open.

She tried to smile.

Instead, tears escaped.

"The baby..."

Marcus's heart stopped.

"No."

Her breathing hitched.

"I can't..."

Another cramp tore through her body.

She gasped.

Marcus looked toward the spreading stain beneath her dress.

Every ounce of color drained from his face.

"Call the trauma team!"

Elaine finally reacted.

She grabbed the emergency phone mounted beside the entrance.

"This is Parker!"

"VIP maternity suite!"

"Level One emergency!"

"Seven-month pregnancy!"

"Possible placental trauma!"

Within seconds alarms echoed through the private wing.

Doctors.

Nurses.

Security officers.

The hallway erupted into controlled chaos.

Yet Marcus never took his eyes off his wife.

"Stay with me."

His voice cracked.

"You hear me?"

Khloe nodded weakly.

"I tried..."

"You don't have to explain."

"But—"

"You don't have to."

He kissed her forehead.

Then he noticed something.

A tiny red mark.

Perfectly shaped.

On Khloe's side.

Like the outline of a stiletto heel.

His expression changed.

Slowly.

Dangerously.

He looked up.

Isabella was still crying.

Still pretending.

Still acting.

Marcus stood.

Every movement deliberate.

He faced her.

"You kicked her."

The words landed like thunder.

Isabella froze.

"What?"

"You kicked my wife."

"I—"

"You kicked the mother of my child."

She shook her head frantically.

"No!"

"Marcus, listen—"

But before another word could leave her mouth—

The elevator doors at the end of the hallway opened.

A man in a navy security uniform stepped out, flanked by two surveillance technicians carrying encrypted hard drives.

His silver badge identified him immediately.

Chief of Hospital Security.

Daniel Carter.

Khloe's uncle.

He walked straight toward the suite.

His expression was unreadable.

When he reached the doorway, he looked once at his injured niece.

Then at Isabella.

Then at Marcus.

Finally, he spoke.

"Mr. Thorne."

His voice was calm.

"I believe you should know..."

He held up one of the encrypted drives.

"...every second inside this suite has been recorded."

The hallway fell completely silent.

For the first time that evening—

May you like

Isabella Rossi stopped acting.

And genuine fear appeared in her eyes.
